Well after my other thread a few days ago about having problems with my auto choke on my colt, today after seeing a video of a car with bike carbs on youtube I had a uncontrollable urge to buy some.
I went straight on to ebay and bought some honda cbr600 carbs. I bought them under the influence of bike carbs so I didnt check untill afterwards what else I would need or If the carbs are ok for the car.
I know I will need a fuel pump, do I just get a cbr 600 pump?
I also know I will have to make a manifold, Can anyone point me to a suitable aluminium plate.I have looked on ebay but I am not sure if I need a certain thickness.
I have aluminium tubing so that should be ok.
The next problem is what should I do about the water outlets on the cylinder head that lets water run into the normal manifold.Do I just weld in some tube and join them up. And the last problem is my thermostat housing is also built onto, into my normal inlet manifold, what should I do about this.
Thanks

What car do you have? What year CBR are the carbs off? The carbs should be good for engines up to between 80-130bhp depending on what year they are off...

Its a mitsubishi colt 1400 70-80hp. I just did some more searching on the net and other people were recomending them for 1400cc 8 valve engines so I guess they should work fine once they are setup.

Yes just get a bike pump - any should work doesn't have to be same model. Could you not get a plate made up for the mani? Or cut your standard one right back to the flange and weld onto that? Don't forget a vacuum takeoff for your brake servo! Any hoses that go through the mani replace with copper pipe incorporate the stat in there somewhere, or worst case don't run a stat at all

Thanks for showing me that, I cant search myself because my bt internet is running very slow so every time I do a seach it just comes back that the search has taken too long and shows no results. My carbs arrived on Sunday ;D, they look very good and they also came withe the intake rubbers, Then today I went to buy some tube and a plate for the manifold. I decided to use aluminium, I regret this a bit because I will have to hire a tig welder or find someone that will weld it for me. Unless I could weld it with a Arc welder and aluminium arc rods? I have been reading about the angle that the carbs should be put at but everyone seems to say different angles, Am I close to the proper angle in any off the pics or am I out. Angle 1, Angle 2

If you have a mig you could try aluminium wire? I bought a cheap disposeable argon bottle and reel of ally mig wire off ebay and welded some thick aluminium plate together.

As for angle...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Honda probably know... ...looks about 30 deg off vertical to me

I have mig and I do have some aluminium wire but its not setup for gas at the moment. What would I need to convert it to gas apart from the gas itself

Not bad for a first attempt at mig welding ally I thought. I Google'd mig welding aluminium and found this. I found it very helpful in getting me to weld my plenum together.

I have been reading about the angle that the carbs should be put at but everyone seems to say different angles, Am I close to the proper angle in any off the pics or am I out. Angle 1, From everything i've read this is the right angle, although a few degrees one way or the other won't hurt much. Its all about the float chamber being level apparently. Although considering the amount of time a bike spends at various angles when being riden they obviously cope regardless As for angle...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Honda probably know... ...looks about 30 deg off vertical to me They look like throttle bodies rather than carbs though

Angle two looks correct. The float bowl is vertical.

I'm running r1 carbs on a 1600 8v and they are mounted roughly at angle 1 or there abouts. I have had to drill out the jets and adjust the needle valves and I think it will still take a little more fuel yet. I use a facet cube and filter king reg set about 3psi for fueling and have just switched to megajolt v4 for the spark which, first impressions, seems to be a fair bit more effective than the previous dizzy setup.
Re manifold I had one made by a local chap who can supply fabbed or cast ones now (but currently only for r1s), just tapped for any neccessary feeds and a vacuum take off on runner 4 for the brakes.
If you were interested in megajolt/edis/loom etc or a manifold pm me and i can give you the guys contact details.
I suppose I really should put up a wip for mine, if anyone would be interested lol.
