OK - Original plan was a stealth Opel Monza - all std on outsidebut packing a bit more punch under the bonnet (see thread in members rides)
Then decided to strip the interior make it a bit more track day orientated and having purchased bucket seats and 4 point harnesses I had a bit of a measure up today and it's a long long way back to the rear seat belt anchor points - big fly & large pot of ointment
Do I
A - Weld a bar accross the back to use that for seat belt anchorage
or
B - Get a lightweight cage made up
If B anyone know who makes a suitable cage bearing in mind I don't realy want bars accross the doors and it isn't exactly in my grand plan to increase the weight too much?

you wanna do track days then i would stick a cage in it if i were you. speak with Chris Isaacs, Andy Robinson and John Webster - they are amongst the best (and arguably THE best) cage builders in the UK. It can be built to your spec, so can be as discreet as you want. An idea might be to make the door bars removable so you can drive with no door bars on the road, and then have them in place for track days. The work i had done was by Chris Isaacs, and you can see from this pic who the door bars have been made removable.

If your fitting harnesses then you definetely need a cage no question IMHO.
Any idea who used to make the cages for the rally monza`s. I guess safety devices would have done one. So they should still be able to make one for you.

Please don't take offence but - I can see the logic of a cage but I've been track daying it for 5 years without one.......
SD haven't replied to an email yet - I had been thinking about one and it was xmas so that might explain it........ They aren't exactly gonna be interested I think!
Just seems a bit daft stripping the interior to then fill the empty hole up with steel!!!
What I was after was personal recomendations of people who would be able to do a sensible cage without making it look like a spaceframe chassis with a steel shell covering it

Tricky, you saved weight but now potentially add more, pondering this myself. My sierra will be quite light but i'm very tempted to add a basic SD cage but many would say it doesnt need it unless you go really wild, after all it is a big, (and eventually) low, well set up car.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Exactly - it weighs a hell of a lot std and I haven't exactly put a lightweight engine in it..... I can just lift a bare block on my own as long as it doesn't have a crank in it!!! Decent shocks and springs narrow tyres cos I'd rather it slid than bit in (if you've seen me on the track you'll understand - no tail action but it does go sideways 4 wheel drifts) and i've never ever had it puppy doging If it's a cage it's got to be simple clean and light Oh and I'd like a bar to mount the harnesses on please

I know what you mean about filling it with steel. The only concern I have about harnesses is they are not as safe as an ordinary belt in the event of a roll unless a cage is fitted.
You could make a lightweight half cage with the aid of pipe bender.

If the roof caves in and you have harnesses with no cage, you are stuck in the seat as pressure gets placed upon your head and spine...then the seat back breaks and your spine is supporting the weight of the car...bye, bye.
You need a cage...And don't angle the rear mounts down. Keep them as high as possible.

Contact details? Are they on the web? Thanks Chris Isaacs is 01268 571077, best to call after 2pm. I don't have numbers for Andy Robinson or John Webster, but i imagine they are easily found on yell.co.uk or alternatively look in Custom Car.

Out of interest, how much do you imagine a 6 point cage to cost Keefy? could be a good idea. the Safety devices seem good value for money? www.prepfab.co.uk/newrollcages.htm

i believe that the typical cost is something like £100-£125 per point. Best to speak to Chris, Andy, etc and see what they quote. The extra you get for the little bit of extra cash is priceless imho. It is bespoke, welded in, top quality, and these guys can offer advice from personal experience.

If you are going to be about when the car goes back to Chris it could be an ideal time to have a chat?
