Just got off the phone to my mate, and we've decided to drive from Hereford, England to St Petersburg, Russia and back again at the end of the year. We're gonna buy a trannie to do it in, and kit her out, gonna aim to hit Russia in the snow. We're gonna make the van bad-ass, bull bars, spots, chunky tyres etc...
Anyone know that part of the world or got any advice or ideas, about the trip or the motor...

never been, but a friend of mine traveled to russia a few times first time his girl companion got bit by a dog and they had to get a train to germany to get any proper treatment through fear of rabies. apparently there is quite a problem with wild dogs or somehting. this happened in moscow second time round he bought this anti dog tazer or something. try that

Take some guns, thats my advice!!! And keep some cheap vodka or whisky on hand for the quieter sections of night-time driving.

Board the back out and put loft insulation in the gap between the body and the boards. That should keep it nice and toasty

dunno what type of van we're gonna get, but it's gonna be used for my mates business, i do want the A-team van though. He has his own haulage company, so it gonna be decked out like the lorries. My mates found an proper night heater for the back of a tranny, should keep us toastie. We're gonna put in a bench seat in the back. a row of 4 spot lights across the roof, big ass bull bars. Get some snow chains and hope for the best. I can't find any good pics or accesories for modding out ya van

If driving in Russia (and most former member states of the USSR) there are some very strange rules ( Note this was as at 1999, when I was there ), e.g. You will need proof that you have brakedown insurance that ensures if your vehicle is involved in an accident (and thus IT or YOU are unable to continue your journey) it will be transported/removed from the country in question. It is a motoring offence to have a dirty window on a travelling vehicle (...so how do you clean a Window at -20oC ?) Also Beware of 'drunks' stagering onto the Highways anyware at anytime of day. Carry a few bottles of Scotch Wisky (they have plenty of there own Vodka ;D) and Cigars as 'Thankyous' for certain 'authorities'. Lane disipline is terrible on motorways out of town When passing/overtaking old Lorries beware of something falling of them such as the exhaust, mudguard or even part of the load! Despite what the media state the Police are not as corupt as is made out and they ARE there to help you (They don't want a diplomatic incident either!). Hi-Jackings of Western vehciles has been stamped out and was more of a mid 90's problem. Finally a word of warning, in Russia Car Insurrance is NOT a legal requirement for locals but for You (as a forienger) it is!

that sounds like a really good adventure. are you going to be camping? yeah, bit of camping, bit of sleeping in the tranny, and a couple of hotels when it gets really cold. Our lady friends are flying out to St Petersburg, to spend a few days with us there, then flying back when we turn the tranny round to head home. TwinCamGTi, thats really usefull stuff to know, cheers ;D as for the the bits falling off the lorries, growing up in Africa ya get used to stuff like that ;D

That's mainly Via Baltica then. If or when you get fed up with the suicidal drivers of the former Soviet Union states you might want to return home St Petersburg -> Finland (Helsinki or Turku) -> Sweden (Stockholm -> Malmö) -> Denmark ->... or a ferry to UK. And it's not the local straydogs you need to worry in the ex-Soviet Union states. It's YOUR dog you need to worry about, because it'll most likely get stolen while you're sleeping. EDIT: I should also say that there are very nice places along Via Baltica and people are mainly very friendly and helpful.
