Right, I'm really going to have to sell the mini. Real life forces sale of nice car! I'm sure you've heard it before.
Anyway, I need to sell it sooner rather than later, and don't want to disappoint anyone, so I'm going to say that the car does need a couple of bits finishing if you want to use it as a daily (Seat mountings sorting, new heater tap is stiff etc) but I'm sure it's better than 95% of the modified minis for sale. I don't want to deceive anyone or waste your time - This is an overall great car, but its 23 years old so don't come expecting something that drives like a new fiesta. It's noisy, bouncy and the steering is dead heavy, but that's what makes it fun!
The engine is a 1380cc A series that looks to have been recently rebuilt (Honing marks on cylinders, plenty of oil pressure etc) and while it was out I fitted a new oil pump because I had one to hand. The old one looked pretty unworn, so it must be fairly new.
It's running a Kent 286 cam, on an unknown head running double valve springs. Breathes through a HIF44, and receives sparks through a Canems Mappable ignition ECU (You can connect it to a laptop and go all fast and furious on it. Doesn't popup and say "Danger to manifold" shortly before the passenger footwell falls out, but if you like that sort of thing I'm sure you could make it happen). The bottom end looks to have been balanced, and it does feel that way.
There is also a lightened flywheel and an orange diaphragm.
The alternator was fairly new, and I replaced the rectifier and regulator for better quality ones to ensure good charging. The starter motor also looks quite new. The engine pulls VERY strong - I personally wouldn't want any more power in a mini! It feels faster than my old 16v 106 Rallye – As soon as it comes on cam it really takes off, its brilliant
The gearbox changes gear with no crunches, and has a hardened diff pin fitted. Occasionally pops out of 2nd gear on overrun, but this doesn't happen often. I had another box that I could have fitted when I changed the engine, but I stuck with this one because it was a known quantity, and changes fine. This spare box is included with the car if you want it!
It's got very nearly new Spax Adjustable shocks and HiLos all round, along with 6x10 Wellers running Yoko A032 tyres with about 60% left. It's not a smooth ride, but there is a hell of a lot of grip. The dampers are wound up quite stiff, I planned to soften them up a bit for comfort.
Up front there is a pair of MK1 Fiesta callipers – It stops brilliantly. No servo, so it needs a good shove on the pedal but it pulls up great.
The body is great - no rust but a couple of minor flaws (crack in the paint) but nothing noticeable from more than a couple of feet. It was resprayed around a year ago and it all looks great.
I've just fitted some TEX stainless steel mirrors, and have a new lock set to fit (to get matching keys) when I get round to it.
Inside the car there are new carpets, door cards, a Fibreglass dashboard, and a rear roll cage. Personally I'm not a great fan of the seats (Red Cobra Monacos) or the harnesses (Sparco ones) but with a morning spent sorting the mounts and giving them a clean they would be spot on. Loads of people glad to swap them for stock seats if you’d prefer.
The speedo is a digital jobbie which also has a temp guage, all your warning lamps and the fuel guage incorporated. Looks pretty damn snazzy. In front of the driver is a 52mm temp guage, revcounter and oil pressure guage. The temp guage is redundant (There is one in the digi dash) and overreads anyway by about 50% because it's been fitted without the voltage stabiliser, so I have bought an ammeter to replace it. It's unfitted but included.
Considering I bought the car for £2400 and have spent almost £1k on it, I think it's priced cheap at £2000. I'll accept reasonable offers if you are just going to come, take it and not faff me about, but remember I've only had it three months and I'm losing nearly £1400.
If I get the asking price, I'll throw in the old engine - A 1330 thats done 15 miles since a rebuild, with a strapped centre main, ported head and kent 276 cam. It ran 85bhp at the wheels supposedly (The new engine feels faster!) but when running made an odd noise. I just gave up on it and bought another engine! I'll also throw in a bare 1275 block, crank (needs regrind) and a standard cam, along with a spare gearbox. If you twist my arm I’ve also got a set of 6 (yes, six! 4 on front and 2 spares!) brand new spotlights .
