Let me introduce you to my new project....a '77 Beta Spyder in Rover nightfire red . It was originally a 1600,but somewhere in it's life it has been fitted with a 2 litre. I've no idea how it drives as the gearbox is fubared, but it did come with a good gearbox. It's been off the road since 2006 (presumably when the gearbox gave up) and it pretty tatty aound the edges. I went to see it 135 miles away in Southport last weekend, thought 'what the hell',handed over the cash and arranged to have it delivered the following monday, for the sum of £160. And here she is....She isn't really that low at the back, the boot was full of spares Twin 40 dcnfs too Looking a little lost in little Japan So today i kicked the Celica out of the garage into the cold and started stripping it down to see if the rumours of terrible rust on 70's Lancias is true... Fire it all out now, think about where to put it later!! See,totally untrue,no rust in sight!! Erm well, perhaps a bit Disease ridden soggy sound deadening.. It's had a mega amount of patching done on it already too....the rear turrets especially. One good thing,it looks like it has uprated springs and dampers on it as well as braided brake lines...Why does any car need this much suspension travel the wrong way though??!! Tomorrow,i break out the grinder and knotted wheel!

Bargain price considering all the nice bits it has on it. Just get the shell solid and you will be fine. Looks nice in that shade.

Just to clarify.....the £160 was for delivery only! The car was a little bit more than that!
I'm glad people are liking the 3 spokes.....at least i'll have some buyers for them! ;D
I think the neighbours are used to me now mate! I was actually thinking Alfa v6 rather than Integrale, but i'm quite excited about running this one with the carbs....it sounds cool.
I think the rest of the cars is pretty solid....it's had a good amount of repair work in the past, that's for sure. I'll get some rust paint on the floor as soon as i've gone over it with the grinder/knot wheel and repaired some of the holes etc. It does seem mechanically sound though
Thanks for the comments folks.
One thing i have noticed,i never realised how spoiled i was with old japanese cars.....they're so easy to take apart with hardly any seized bolts, whereas this is the complete opposite, everything is awkward! And looking at the state of how the electrics have been fitted,no wonder they break down!! lol.

Nice looking car, and less rust than I was expecting!
POR15 paint is really good at keeping the rust away.
Alfa V6 and some Chromodora replicas would be the mutts danglies!

I love this car, a family friend bought one new in 1980, black with tan vinyl seats. He chose a 1600 because he didn't want the PAS that was standard on the 2000. I remember it started to rust on door seals and the boot lip about a year later... The body was assembled by Zagato if I remember well. The rear lights are specific to the Beta Spyder, and basically impossible to find. Yours seems to have later model bumpers and front grille, fitted from 82 or 83, and the Spider badge is from an Alfa. The Beta being called Spyder
Congratulations and respect to you for this pick! And please pretty please, sell those wheels ;D

Nice! Are they pretty common in the UK? I don't remember them. Don't listen to the guys about the 3 spokes, the car will look so much nicer with just about anything else. I know this is about the Lancia, but I actually started to physically drool when I saw the Corona. Is there a thread on it? -Steve

Nice! Are they pretty common in the UK? Nope, very rust prone so not many left anywhere. Don't listen to the guys about the 3 spokes, the car will look so much nicer with just about anything else. I agree, those 3-spokes are to modern for that car. I know this is about the Lancia, but I actually started to physically drool when I saw the Corona. Is there a thread on it? Click on Hongkongphooey's "member of the month" banner. Oh, yeah I already said I love this, but let me say it again. Having it in Little Japan as you call it only makes it better, it's so good not to focus on one brand/country!!! Hmm, I need to get some Japanese cars, and Italian ones... ;-)

Face it....the only three spokes that come anywhere near being cool are Super Advan IIs imo! I realise Lancia named it a Spyder because of Alfas Spider, but i like the script on the badge,so i think it'll stay. It also came with a pair of spare rear lights in the boot, and the original light surrounds and grille, which will be going back on. I may leave the bumpers though as holes have been drilled in the front and rear wings to fit them, and the chances of getting a good pair of short bumpers are pretty slim.I might try them without the thick black rubbing strips though. I've pretty much decided on red for it too.....probably something like Vauxhall Flame or Ford Radiant red.....something really red. I think i've decided on the rims too....but they may need the arches extending. ;D And yes, clicky on the ickle Corona in my banner down below for the thread Steve. Thanks again all for taking the time to comment.

Having it in Little Japan as you call it only makes it better, it's so good not to focus on one brand/country!!! Hmm, I need to get some Japanese cars, and Italian ones... ;-) That's true, but there are so many old japanese cars that i really want to own,it really took some thinking about to buy this. I am pleased that it's different to what i'd normally own though. I like these cars but Vauxhall flame red is quite boring if u dnt mind me saying and its 2 popular on the roads! lol also it gets sun damaged very easily! Of course i don't mind you saying....all input welcome. It's one of my lesser favourite colours but, i'm not really into mad colours and red suits it,it's a nice easy colour to diy spray (after my shennanigans with the pearl blue on the celica i'll welcome that) and most importantly,SWMBO wants red ;D

You know when you start a project and you have all good intentions of making a really professional job of it,doing everything perfectly, but when you get down to it,you realise your skill/patience/resolve/tools and equipment says otherwise? Well i had that moment today!! ;D After seeing the amount of patches already slapped over the rot rather than cutting the rot out i've realised that i'm never going to make it perfect with my skills and budget,so i'm going to get it solid rather than pretty and roll. Anyway, after a couple of hours with the knot wheel,i was left with a headache, tingly fingers,a very dusty garage and this Some holes, dodgy seat and seatbelt mounts and pinholes everywhere So off came the knot and on went the cutting disc......Ooops. This is about the point when i start thinking....How the hell am i going to fix this!! Unlike some great threads on here, there probably won't be many detailed pics of the repairs and i tend to get carried away with working and forget the camera....I just hope i can find some good metal to weld to! Why do we do this again?

LOL.... Yes... Why ?
Coz its worth it.
Good luck.
Would cutting floor sections complete from a crashed modern make the job easier ?
Rather than welding in bits of flat steel ?
