Anyone got any experience of this?
I want to make a few gaskets, all the same size/shape, and have been thinking about the easiest way.
When i was a kid i used to operate die cutting presses so started thinking about the possibility of making a steel rule die but aplying pressure with a vice. Would surfice for doing a run of 10 say.
Anyone made any DIY steel rule dies?
Ive been looking for the blade steel and found a supplier but trying to buy this sort of thing puts you into industrial manufacturing teritory. They never seem to like dealing with the public and selling in small quantities and always seem to have a minimum order. Ive e.mailed them to find out but i don't expect a reply.
Maybe i could make the steel blades? Grind the bevel by hand? Sounds like a big load if grief though. I need curves otherwise i'd use stanley blades.
Or, are there companies that will make the complete die for you? Not sure if that would be expensive though.
I may be able to get the gaskets made but i like the idea of being able to make them in varying thicknesses and different materials as and when i need.
Any thoughts?

You can buy punches for holes which aren't too expensive.
For the curved bits I'd make a template from something like steel or alu and then cut round it with a stanley blade. Gotta be quicket than making a complex shaped die.

I have been using scissors but its a pain. I don't need any round holes. I need a frame, about 6cm x 12cm, 1cm thick with radius corners. Unfortunately i need them from thin plastic .5mm and 1mm, as well as gasket paper, hence why scissors are a nightmare. If it wasnt for the radius corners then a knife and ruler/template would be pretty easy. This is why I'm thinking about die cutting ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Just had a thought. I can sandwich lots of layer together and make a template jig and use a router to cut em out ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

for 10x gaskets is it worth the hassle ...template with a sharp knife

It is if it gives neater results then a knife.
Its not easy cutting the radius neatly and not easy getting them all exactly the same.

this is the shape i need ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/GraemeVW/gasket.jpg) If i cant make a die cutter, any other clever ideas apart from routing a stack or struggling with the knife?

Would steel strapping be of use,you know, the stuff used on wooden crates and pallets? Haven't got any myself but it's usually just cut off and thrown away but is very bendable and I know from experience can be bl**dy sharp.

could you bosh out a hole with a die in each corner then use a knife for the traight bits

I would be on the bay and tool shops looking to buy a cheap fret saw.
Will wake cutting these tidy painless and simple and turns it's hands to many jobs you would not expect.
Will be a lot cheaper than getting a die made or buying the tool steel and tools are always good ;D

Not sure if steel strapping would be wide enough, how wide is it? It may well work if its wide enough to set in ply on edge with enough support while still leaving enough exposed for cutting.
The hole punch would make hand cutting easier but intersecting a circle with a straight line, to get a smooth transition isnt easy either.
Fret saw would work, i already have one too, but i also already have a router ;D
The cutting frames are pretty much exactly what i mean by 'steel rule die', looks like a good source for maybe getting one made.
Its a very simple die and i wouldnt mind paying to have one made if it means i can make more gaskets as and when i want out of different materials and thicknesses.
Its for a project i have lined up. Each finished product needs 8 gaskets and i may need to make 2 or 3 of the final product. I'm not fully sure what thickness and material they will need to be, hence wanting the option to quickly/easily make more.
Its also possible the project will be repeated a few times. Therefore i need maybe 20 gaskets of differing thicknesses/materials during 'product development' and maybe 32 of the final design.

We use flexitallic at work, they have a little mobile cutting trailer for making oddball stuff too. May be worth a shout to see if they could run you off a small batch for a reasonable price? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
