As i mentioned before, i have just passed my driving test and am now turning my atterntion to getting the Kitten MOTed and on the road but have a few questions about wheels and arches:
- My wheels and tyres (tyres mainly) stick out of the arch at the front by about an inch at the highest point on the side wall, and probably 1/2" on the rim and tread surfaces. I have heard this is an MOT failure - is this true? how hot are they on this? - its not a problem as i can shuv some originaly wheels on there wich have good tread but are abit old and hard tyres lol)
- The kitten needs to be lower. The problem once again lies at the front of the car. the orignal coilovers are replaced with AVO full adujustable dampers, and about 1-2" shorter 180lb springs instead of 150lb. idea being that with the spring seat wound right to the bottom, the car will be at my ideal ride height - this being about 1" between the arch and tyre, however like this it rubs ect, should i turn up the damping? or get stiffer springs? and will this not ruin everything on a car which weighs 500kg?? this also isnt a despirate problem as it is would up a few inchs at the moment giving enough clearance. many thanks... hope that all makes scence.
i despirately need to get my kitten on the road, in the mean time I'm driving dads 306 1.9td....

You can easily move the arch up a bit. You cut vertically up to above the arch, cut a 1" slice out the top and remount the arch higher up.
I'd probably fit the curse word wheels for the MOT. They know what you get up to, but there's nothing they can do about it. Try and get an older bloke to do the MOT, they practically encourage that sort of behaviour.

In theory, if the tyres stick out it should fail, if the tyres rub anything, it should fail.
As TommyG says, its all down to the tester and what day it is, where the moon is in relation to the outer stratoshpere etc...

Its not an MOT failure but it is illegal and the police can fine you for it etc.
Think of all tho open wheel hot rods out there, there all in the same boat and for the most part get away with it.

I'm pretty sure it is an MOT fail, switch the wheels for the MOT. I think Hot rods etc are excempt or sommat...but not sure....I've not been much help really...:

I think Hot rods etc are excempt or sommat...but not sure....I've not been much help really...: its fine. my prefect had an inch of tyre outside each front arch (to lazy to band them) and was MOT'd twice in my possesion. good job the law didn't see it, 'cos its a road traffic act violation that no car is exempt from. hot rodders excuse is "they fell off at the campsite, officer ;D". MOTing it is not the problem, running it on the road might be

it's an MoT failure and an offence if the TREAD of the tyre sticks out further than the arch. hence the trend for stretched tyres - they can't fail you for the rim sticking out.

This is what ive heard from a few sources, and believe to be tested by the MOT. If in doubt, swap them for the MOT and plead innocence to the cops if they pull you!

put the stock ones on to avoid MOT sillyness and whack em on when you get back - if the rozzers stop you tell them to go and catch real criminals - they love that !
