Hello chaps
Some of you might recall me putting up some pics of the missus' Bantam a couple of years back - now I'd like to get it running.
It's been stored for about 10 years but I really don't know where to start. Yup, thicko I know, but I could really do with some help, esp. as I'd like TopTaff to have a bit of a pleasant surprise after all the aggro she's had this year.
I'm pretty ham-fisted but would like to do summat constructive as the year draws to a close. All help really gratefully received!
Thanks in advance!

It would help if we knew what state it was in.. first Q, Is the engine free? if so, battery, clean plug, clean fuel and kick it lots, no joy? strip carb as it will probably have a float bowl full of varnish, compression? fuel getting to spark plug?, keep us posted m8

Hiya!
It's a D14 4/S. Was fully restored 20 years back and had little use since.
Guess a good start would be flushing out the tank?

Oh, and you forgot to mention it lives in your lounge ......
Sorry, not much else to add Richy.
Hope all is good your side.
I am sure I took a pic or two of it the last time I was there.... no idea where it is now though.

My dad had a D14/4 that he got after someone nearly finished restoring it. He got some parts. But never got it running. He sold it to a man in the next village. Think he fitted new seals and got it going.
He also had a D10. But that was in bits. It got caught in the fire I had in my yard. Buckled the front wheel and took most of the paint off it. I gave the bike to my sister to take to the scrap yard.

id fully expect the carb to need a rebuild the amals are notorious for sticky sliders, especially with old fuel. as you say, flush the tank, if its had mix sat in the system it wont have done any of it any good- when the petrols evaporated out of the carb it will have left oily residue in there which will block jets and gum up the slide.
change the oil, and hand crank it over with the kickstart to fill up the bearings, as theyll be dry, as will the rings.a smidge of oil in the barrel will help then seal if they are totally dry. check it sparks ok with the plug out held against the barrel, and hand cranking the kickstart again. if it is, don't touch anything electrical, especially the staror plate if the timing set, as they're a curse word to get right!
no real reason it should fire up though if its in good enough nick to live in your living room!

Cheers chaps! Much appreciated.
Oh, and it's not in the lounge now. There's a Hornby in its place.

Have you tried kicking it???
Id start by seeing if it'll run as is. Change the fuel and oil, clean out the tank if required.
But a battery in it, check you have a spark (take the plug out, put it in the ht lead against the metal of the bike), should be blue-white. Then put the plug back in and give her a kick to prime.
Then Kick away!!! It may take a while!!
If it refuses, check there is fuel on the plug... it it is oiled, chage the plug and re-try. If it still refuses, more investigations are required...
PS: Id do this out doors and not in the front room. The smoke from an un-used stroker has to be seen to be believed!!!!

What Dez says about seals. Thats the ticket. It may run as is, with fuel etc sorted out BUT.....its been sat a few years and 2 stroke crank seals are a big deal, they dry out and only sorta seal at best. For the price of replacement, you may as well, better running, less likely to seize due to weak mixture and be loads easier to start etc. Just my 2 pence worth

Cheers Stink. Makes sense, so I might add seals to my Lightning Spares shopping list.

Thanks to you all so far! Just a further spanner in the works - the missus reckons there's a prob too with the carb, in that it has minimal power under load. Any thoughts?

amals for these are still sorta plentiful. Known for getting very gummed up though, possibly just very blocked up jets. If you have any place local that can do it, get it ultra sonic bath cleaned. Should not cost much. Also, check fuel tap. flow and supply. May be getting enough fuel for low revs but not enough when under power

My advice is to get it going then see how well it works... cleaning and inspecting the carb is a good start but I'd make sure the rest works first.
