This has been on my wish list for ages and now I've got one ;D This is a VW Type 181 - aka the VW Thing (I kid you not - that was the name they were sold under in the American market), known in Europe as a Trekker. This one is ex-Bundeswehr. Picking it up at the weekend so more details and pics then........ Love the fact that the doors come off, windows can be removed, screen folds flat etc.... All we need now is a brilliant summer next year US spec thing with the roof up. Mine needs a hood but managed to track one down today

It's funny how much they look like Mk1 golfs from the profile with the roof up. Nice wagon boss.

My dream! AFAIK most military ones had LSD and a difflock on them and a difference about the transmission, but cannot remember what. Congratulations!

Well, 'Thing' is home and parked up with a big tarpaulin over it until I can collect the new hood from Hertfordshire. Got to say I'm well pleased with it except the near side front brake was binding and getting hotter and hotter on the way home and there is now brake fluid everywhere Damn wheel is too hot to touch to take it off to investigate further at the moment!

The rain had finally stopped and I was at home for half an hour in daylight so had a quick look over the new beast very pleased - can't find any rusty bits. Managed to get a hood and frame for it last night (surprisingly hard to get hold of). It needs some of the stiching re-doing and a few repairs but it is basically ok and is an original green military one. lots of odds and sods under the hood which I'm not sure what they are - I guess they are military fittings? I think that some are spring clips for rifles and the other bits are for the rifle butts to sit in but I may be miles off the mark? also found a pair of these.......... any ideas? sorry if that's a silly question but this is my first Trekker (but already high on the list of best cars I've ever owned!) ;D also has an Eberspacher petrol heater but I haven't tried it yet...

that means "change engine soon" ;D no clue about that, but there was a "mobile Bundeswehr Priest set" on ebay a couple of months ago, so you could set up your own church.... a friend of me has this : his has a watercooled Passat engine though... and this is the number of engines he has been through yet ;D :

ok, I bought the Trekker without a hood but sourced a damaged one elsewhere. I've had the tears and rotten stiching repaired but am now having rouble getting the hood to fit. The back corners don't seem to want to stretch far enough to locate on the hoops on the body they should fit over? Is there a particular sequence you should follow when fitting the hood back on? Also, does the rear hood support bar go inside or outside the main frame when it mounts on the two metal posts, or doesn't it matter? Anyway, the hood feels a bit 'small' and the frame doesn't quite meet the locating pins and clips on the top of the screen. I don't want to force it in case I damage it, or do I just need to be a bit brutal with it?!!
