I had this idea for years now but finally got round to doing it thanks to new house, i wanted to try and make something that would not look too much like a piece of a car. This is actually my girlfriend Lottie de-greasing the old cam shafts for me cleaned up and painted Hope to get lampshades soon, would like to make these from scratch also but will have to see with time/money=possibility.

What profile will give the best light output I wonder... If you use too hot a cam, will your bedtime reading suffer?

Cool, they will look ace when they are done.
There was a girl who cropped up on here a while ago who was making wall and table lamps from car parts. She was studying design at Brighton uni I think.

Looks really cool, I think I would have polished it rather than painted it though. Making car furniture is cool. I was planning on making some spot lamps out of old bowl headlamps. I was also planning on making a sofa from a cast iron bath but never got round to it

Hmmm, not sure they do it for me, they are not "pretty" enough, they remind me of old turned wooden jobbies, maybe its the colour?

it's good old beige top coat, i was going to figure out a way of running the wires a bit hidden but am just going to have hem coming down the back maybe clip them at the bottom with something pretty.

this sort of thing opens up a whole world of smuggling car parts into the house with swmbo approval the engine can become a table like the one on top gear as could a bellhousing i suppose a gearbox and propshaft could become a standard lamp there have been quite a few chunks of body shells turned into sofas, and on one of those build a new home programmes, a mini shell was turned into a (large) desk should there be a competition to see who can smuggle the most amount of car into their house? ttfn glenn "its a coffe table" he says while dragging a t5 across the living room carpet

Have you seen the crank stool that James (EightSix) made for Area52? You and he must think alike when it comes to making stuff with car parts: Very comfy too!

have found someone through work that supplies old electrics for movies etc, will check him out and see if he has anything. get in.
i saw that stool, looks good. cranks are tricky to incorporate in a piece.
