2005 was a sabbatical for me and I didnt compete at all, due to either no car, no trailer, back injury and DEFRA changing the ruling on use of agricultural land. Previously I have done road rallies, scatters, treasure hunts and twelve cars in my AE86, XR4X4 and MG Maestro`s as a driver and MG Maestros, Novas and Discovery`s (last time this was used it ended up being rolled ) as a navigator. Also navigating for Paul Swift as closing car on a historic rally in a Nova. Autotesting in MK1 astra, AE86, a succession of MG Maestros and my MK1 Escort. Stage rally navigating in a MK2 Avenger with a Toyota 4AGE engine. In 2006 I will be using my Opel Monza for autotesting, drifting and track days. My brother in law is getting his MK1 avenger ready for historic rallying so I will be co-driving that. Maybe start road rallying again but really need a navigator.

I did a bit of sprinting and hillclimbing in my Minor, in the true spirit, ie driving to and (hopefully) from each event. It was very enjoyable.
I used to do scatters in my Minor van and came close to winning the local motorclub championship. Before the van I used a Lada and shocked a few people on my first event cruising past one fellow competitor in his Maestro turbo on a long stretch of straight run. Thinking back we were lucky there was not a big accident on all the scatters we did!

the most memorable accident on one of our motor club scatters was when jarvis put his seat ibiza td over a roundabout, in the swallwell area of newcastle. lost it at about 40mph on some ice and didnt half bend the car, the signs on the roundabout and didnt half make a mess of the new alloys he'd just put on. if memory serves me right he hasnt done anymore.

No for me the most memorable was the time when I was navigating for Richard on a treasure hunt and we ended up rolling the discovery into a field when we skidded on diesel. Neither of us had seatbelts on. He stayed in the drivers seat. I ended up getting thrown into the back seats landing on our two wives. We had to climb out through the gap in the windows and had to get checked out in hospital. He took the results the following night and we ended up winning ;D Then I found out two years later that I had broken my back without realising. Not good

Oh they are.. ;D Even more so as they are done at night on public roads.
You get a start time and you are handed a list of grid refs at that time. The idea is to plot these on the OS map then set off in the car to as many of the points plotted as possible and then get back to the start by a set time. Penaltied are incured if you are late, break rules etc.
The further away ones are worth more points, the hard to find ones are worth more, most are worth 10-15, the others can be up to 40. They are usually things like Tel Box, Whats the phone number? Write it down and this proves you found it.
All above board and legal, organised through Local Motor clubs and have set rules, its not just a turn up and thrash about in the country.....honest.. ;D
Road Rallying is similar but has a pre set route unlike a scatter which is a free for all. Again set start and finish times, route checks and controls normally manned not something to write down. These are timed so its an average speed of 30MPH, but by the time you have plotted, sorted where your going, missed a junction ETC, this average soon climbs!! ;D

Any regulations on the cars, or just have to be road legal?

Loads of regs, mainly keeping them looking standard, its not stage rallying so no big advertizing stickers, no more than 4 forward facing beams, loads of other stuff. You can more or less run a standard car, thats what its all about. Goto www.mantasport.co.uk and click My Rallying then the Rally photo bit, shows a couple of the blokes from the Manta Owners club... Just a minor thibg about the 4 lights, they use 6 and get away with it..??
