Hi there, I've been lurking on the forum for a while now, and thought I'd register and share my project with you all. It's a 1979 Golf GL 1.1, that I bought about a year ago for £350. It had a fresh MOT, FSH, and was on 36500 miles The service history showed that by 1981, it had already done 21000 miles, so it hasn't seen very frequent use since then and as such, it is in fairly remarkable condition, everything present and working, even only on the second set of tyres. But, as with any car this age it was starting to look a bit tired, and rough around the edges. It hadn't been garaged since 1996 either. Anyway, I've been driving it for the past year, and its now on 41000 miles (complete with a Main dealer service unnecessary, but I felt compelled to maintain the history...) Looked like this for most of the time: Last month, I've built a garage (read: shed ) In preparation for carrying out a full refurb on the car. I'm not really calling it a resto, as its not really in that bad condition, and the project wont be a patch on most! Haven't really done much to it so far, just been stripping it down. It would appear that the only welding needed will be some patching on both inner wings I will be painting the engine bay, and insides of the panels myself, and probably be getting the outside done professionaly. This is my first project, and i've never painted anything before, so I don't want to fluff it up I've also been experimenting with electroplating, seen here is the battery clamp: So, there we go, no idea how long this will take, but Ideally, I want to be driving it next summer

My first experience with proper spraying was on an engine bay. It's difficult! Lots of strange angles and awkward nooks and crannies to get into. I ended up with a fair few runs but not the end of the world. Good luck with it

Totally forgot that I'd started this thread! Thanks for the comments Got the engine removed a while back up on the stand ready to rebuild Pile of bits to be powdercoated, along with rear beam and other bits And also collected all the new hardware for rebuilding the rear axle, along with one of the last radiator cards from VW I'm planning to tackle everything in stages, rear axle, front suspension, front brakes etc. to hopefully minimise the hit on my wallet. Also trying to be methodical, and make sure I do everything right, as this is my first ever project

Small light Golf for £350?! Within the last few years?! That's amazing, is that!

Nice work ! Are you sure thats a 1.1 engine, as it looks like its got the later "HK " type of cylinder head with 8 studs for the inlet manifold instead of 10. Check the engine no. its above where the alternator bracket bolts on. Might be a pleasant surprise ( and enable you to order the right parts ! ) Although they don't often need more than a head gasket.

Haha, when I bought it I didn't know a thing about old golfs, I even posted up on the owners club asking if I should buy it ;D It is definately a 1.1, its an FA code engine. Its the later cylinder heads that have 2 studs and 8 bolts. With regards to the engine, I'm going to replace the headgasket, regrind the valves, replace all the nuts/bolts/gaskets with new, and generaly clean/paint it up. Having only done 40k i cant see it needing anything else, it runs fine anyway

Are you in the Westcountry? It's a local numberplate, looks an absolute steal at £350, can't believe the bargain you got there. If you ever want to sell, there is a lovely corner of Cornwall waiting for it here!!

If you ever want to sell, there is a lovely corner of Cornwall waiting for it here!! Yes, I'm in east devon near Axminster. the car was originaly sold in Seaton, and has stayed very local. The first owner was a local judge, and then it was owned by an elderly couple in the same village as me. When they passed away, they left it to the local mechanic in the village (who sold it to them, and then to me) I recognise the name 'wafers' you're not on SWdubs by any chance? Don't plan on ever selling if I can help it, but I will add you to the long list of people who want it ;D

Yes I am on swdubs mate, is your username the same as on here? Great that the car has little details like the tax disk holder and key rings. Yeah, stick me down on the list Be good to see it at a swdub meet when she's altogether again.

Not done a lot lately, but split the head and block, and got round to degreasing and painting the block today Dropped the ball a bit though, as I have to remove the flywheel to remove the sump + oil pump housing, so going to have to borrow an impact gun for that. I know i've painted the core plugs, but as I'm not rebuilding the bottom end, I cant replace them. Painted a few other bits too, everything else will be powdercoated, when I actually get roung to oranising it little here, little there, but its progress I suppose.

Looks like you're making good progress on this!
A way of getting the flywheel off without a rattle gun that I've used is to get some strong washing line type cord (or rope), loop it around the eye on the bottom of the block, and around a stud on the flywheel, or the teeth to stop it turning while you undo the flywheel bolts. You'll need a breaker bar to undo the bolts, but it worked on my old Mk2!

This thing is slowly slowly slowly getting done... The head and inlet manifold were cleaned using Raceglaze aluminium cleaner and a toothbrush style stainless steel wire brush. This way, it doesn't stain or mark the aluminium. Very happy with the finish I probably could have just painted it silver, but it would have bugged me ;D I'm weird like that you see Still havent got the sump off ;D will do soon I promise! oh yeah, the oil in the cylinders was from an old rocker cover leak getting in through the spark plug ports The refurbished running gear is pending, just waiting on the powdercoater. Progress is very slow on this, mainly because of my 'new old stock' addiction ;D I think i need help! This is my other one, but I'm considering selling it for something rwd...

Had a few bits powdercoated And some bits plated Finally took the flywheel off, by actually thinking about it... novel idea hey Little more work on the engine Few detail shots Also made a start on some bodywork Gots me some speed holes in the rear valance Quite a few annoying little bits like this And the usual scabby arches, but nothing to worry about really. Probably will make/buy a rollover jig to clean up and shutz the underside next
