Mk2 escort with a 'spackamatic' gearbox will accept an 1800 zetec with type-9 box more easily than a manual mk2, right? It may be wishful thinking, but I have the engine & box sitting here & a cracking shell has come up....

yes, it will, cos the tunnel is bigger

yes we re shelled the running gear from a rotten x packed mk 2 into a 1.3 spaktastic years ago, we even left it badged as a 1.3 popular! altho it gained the boot spoiler from the 2000 too, that and the wolfies were the only exterior clue! always wonder what happened to that old thing, was red and had dry sumped stage 2 pinto! only thing that needed touching (welding) was back end for extra suspension brackets! (anti tramp bar i think it is?) (thats if u want to use the rs2000 lsd axle)

Only thing you may have the change is the gearbox mount crossmember and the gear stick hole. Use the Auto prop the box will fit alright, it fits in a manual tunnel alright too

I'm doing a type 9 conversion when it gets warmer.
you have to:
move gearstick hole bakwards about 2" (not sure if this is the same with auto's) (but if your clver, just cut an oval out the tunnel and turn it around.)
new prop shaft, rs one will do, can pick up the 2 pice ones for about £20-30, and imo are better than the single piece ones, the single piece ones aare used by rallie boys mainly due to the fact the are easier to change. they put less strain on the gearbox cos they come in at less of a gradient.
the mounting bracket is lower down and is wider, so you have to weld a plate in the floorpan either side and mount it through the floor.
you can use an alternator bracket for the clutch lever, as the pinto one is mounted on the engine, and i think the zetec one isnt, I'm not sure about that one though.
and you bin the sandwich plate that goes inbetween the gearbox and engine, as this is only really needed to stop dust, and isnt worth the hassle of getting a new one fabricated

I hope your not giving the ally bellhousing away If you are il be one the next train to bermingham When i did the conversion on mine it went fairly easly. The auto prop will fit. Its a little shorter but more importantly its got a bigger splined UJ to mate up with the type 9 box. I'm not convinced a RS2000 one will fit as they used a differant box but I'm probably wrong. You have a choice when it comes to the gearbox x-member. You can use a seirra one and weld in new mounts either side of the tunnel. Thats pobably the easyest way but it leaves bolts poking through the floor! when i did it i used the standard escort x-member and moved the orginal tunnel mounts to compensate for the longer box, you also have to make up some spacers to make the box sit lower or the back hits the tunnel. Of course if youve got a auto tunnel thats probably all irrelivent! The old cut out a rectangle and turn it rounds the best method for moving gear stick hole but i couldent be arsed to measure it so just welded 2 bits back in! I used a rs2000 alloy bell housing so for the clutch i made up a alloy bracket which bolted on in the spare starter motor hole and the cable went through this, easy! The standard 4 speed speedo cable is too short so get a longer one but this might be differant for an auto. Oh and you will want to lop a load off the gearstick. I made it about 4" long!

no, its not that gearbox or bell. its the one on the far right and the non rs bellhousing thats sitting about doing nothing ive never heard of the rs propshaft not fitting tho

we used all the rs2000 running gear, as we had a full car with excelent mechanics, unfortunatley what surrounded them was a bit of a tea bag, all our bits were meant to fit together, we didnt even think about trying the 1300 axle/ prop! lol was all worth it just to see the look on mr bmw drivers face as he couldnt keep up! lol

mine will be running 1300 diff (4.1:1) with an rs2000 (injection) engine and box.
but, the propshaft for the 1300 is too long, as the type 9 is about 2" longer

seventynine, will it not be silly to use the 1300 non lsd axle? youll be spinning for weeks! also which rs2000 was injection? must be mk5+?
