why does my car hate me? well last night taking my girlfiend home, the car started and ran sweet. 3 mins down the road it started making a sound i can only describe as tin cans being dragged behind a car for about 3 seconds then it died. My dad towed me home and this morning i pulled the engine out and stripped it to find; number 2 so from what i can see its detted! the mystery is the engine has been running rich, it was a sub zero night and the engine was warming up. there was no indication (pinking ect) and it ran beautifully all day untill that point. when it died it was at very low throttle opening (so no load) and low RPM. it has also killed the top ring in 2 and 4. any suggestions why this may have happened? i need a +0.060" piston and a set of rings minimum everything else including the head and bores are mint (lucky) i need it on the road by the 6th latest, so suggestions of suppliers, spares, bits, engines all welcom. Anyone who tell me to put a pinto in it gets a slap! ;D

Check your carb. In the Imp world we are seeing a lot of carbs jettisoning the tiny screws that hold the throttle butterfly onto its spindle... that causes very similar damage. Such as this: Hope that helps - and good luck finding the pistons/bits to fix it.

Sorry to hear that Sure you'll get it sorted mine. Something get sucked into the engine? Anything wedged in the piston head/rings? On a note, I was outside in -2 today working on the car for 2 hours, changing needles and trying to quell a fuel leak (pouring out the bellmouths, lol!). Found out float needles are shot. Do I have them? Hell no! ;D

checked the carb and all is well, I'm 99.9999% sure it was caused by detonation but i cant understand why when it was rich, cold and under no load. on further inspection it looks like the ring has stuck on number 2 but i cant see why this would have caused this?

Hmmmmm its right around where the squish is on those pistons isnt it? What did malcom say about things like this? It dosent have to run very lean, only into the condition where the engine is under load, and the burning is at its hottest, i.e. just under stoich. In these conditions the air is a lot denser mabe there was a little too much O2 and not enough fuel when giving it some?
Would have had to lose a lot of screws to do three pistons like that! Ill give steve a ring see if he has any of his chevette bits hanging around, i know hes still got his chevette. Super duper mega harsh mate, you can have the engine out of my new imp, but i don't think it would be much use!
Good luck in getting it fixed

The engine was still warming up. the only thing i can think of is that glowing carbon build up ignited the mixture.

You'd have to have a massive comp ratio to do that damage with a rich mixture.
Is this on all four pots or just the one?

compression ratio is 11:1, it was happening on 1,2 and 3 the worst and very slightly on 4.

Very weird, cant work that out and ive seen loads of melted pistons! never seen one like that.
Could it be that the ring broke and caused the problem rather than it being caused by detionation? it just looks like problem originated at the ring groove. Still the marking on the piston CROWNs fits with it going lean at some point. deosent amke much sence.
id check the carb and dizzy before you run it again tho.
Edit: 11:1 on 95 unleaded? living very dangerously there!
