Plz help, i'm about to implode with rage! I'm trying to connect my pc to my laptop so i can play red alert 2 against my eldest son! i have virgin broardband with a modem, the modem is wired to a wireless router, the pc is wired to the router and the laptop connects to the net wirelessly via said router! i have a crossover cable and a standard cable (ethernet), the pc has 2 ethernet slots, the laptop has 1. i've tried the 'network setup wizard' in control panel on both, but no go! What am i doing wrong people?? Cheers, Tom?

you won't need crossover cable for this: Connect the PC to the router via cable and the laptop via wireless, you've then got to rely on the router to bridge the connections (most do, but some put wireless connections on a different subnet).
if they're both on XP they'll probably autonegotiate and sort it out that way.
Check in windows system properties both computers are using the same workgroup name.
To check they can "see" eachother, run ip config on both machines (note down the IP address, should be something like 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3) and then ping the laptop from the desktop and vice versa.
If they respond to Pings then you're okay.
google the following: IPConfig ping
you might need crossover for this: as an alternative plan, you could directly connect the two using the crossover cable via ethernet on both machines. Check the network card on the PC is working, are you sure it has 2 ethernet ports? one is likely to be a modem.

Mostly as above....... I'd get two none-crossover cables and plug 'em in to the router (should be 3 or 4 ports available). Then
RUN
CMD
IPCONFIG will give you the ip addresses and subnets in use.
Each should be pretty much identical 192.168.0.1 will probably be the 'gateway' Your IP addresses will be 192.168.0.ANYTHING FROM 1 TO 254 SUBNET - Usually 255.255.255.0 on most home default settings.
As long as these are OK you're good to go.
If there's a problem with either card or connecting cable the PC or laptop won't receive the IP from the router and will end up with IP ADDRESS 169........ which means it gave itself an address after failing to find a dhcp server.
Try that lot - if you get stuck - email me on johnDOTwestonATrtlworldDOTde and I'll try n help out further.

Thankyou very much guys! (apart from VIP lol) it seems to work if i keep a crossover cable connected between the 2 and run an internet game? Before it used to kick the pc out as soon as the game started. I might try your suggestions if this fooks up, but for now it's working. Thanks again!
