Hi guys.
A few months back I made a table top for the garden from some pine slats I had. I didn't have any wood treatment stuff so used Sunflower Oil. Applied liberally and left to 'dry'. Its still a tiny bit greasy but not so bad (run your finger over it and you just get a faint residue).
It got me wondering why wood preservative is so expensive. I'm in the process of designing and building a new bit of fencing from some salvaged bed frame slats. I'd like to use some cooking oil to treat it again (was thinking of applying some clothing dye first too - to darken it - and giving it time to dry). Anyway this will be a little more permanent than the table so was wondering if there is any reason why I should not do this?
Any idea how long it'd be before I'd need to recoat it? Will it rot or attract insects? None of these have been a problem so far for the table but its only been a few months.
Obviously its Pine (so a very soft wood) so I don't expect it to last more than a few years regardless of what I do to it but thats fine as its rented accomdation and I don't plan to be here forever.
Cheers.
