Ok, this isn't strictly on-topic but it's kind of related. Last year I sold my old JDM spec H22 engine (2.2 VTEC from a J import Prelude Si). Being the JDM motor it had 220bhp in standard form. These engines are cheap as chips because the Civic boys don't touch them (too heavy). I just wondered if there is a standard Honda RWD gearbox that will bolt up to this engine without the need for custom bellhousings/adapters? Of course, this would still leave the problem of overcoming the engine spinning the wrong way (5 reverse gears ). Anyway, just a thought as a cheap alternative to the S2000 motor. Furthermore, H22s can be boosted to 300bhp on standard internals. Food for thought.

Of course, this would still leave the problem of overcoming the engine spinning the wrong way (5 reverse gears ). for anyone running live axles, weld the breather up and flip the axle, redrill breather in new pos. good excuse to 4-link. as for s2000 motors my boss wants to put one in his e30 m3. curse word knows what I'm gonna do with the diff in that!

I thought of the H22 conversion last year, for my old Ascona. What I was going to do was mate the H22 to a Getrag 262 box (plenty strong enough). I thought of using the 1031 Volvo axle flipped upside down as you suggest. My only reservation was with the gearbox which was not designed to run backwards. Would running it backward cause meshing/selection problems for the gears? Or possibly accelerated wear?
Anyone any thoughts on this? They are really quite powerful engines for their size, and cheap too. I picked up my old H22 from an old geezer who had written off his Prelude. I only payed a one-er for a low mileage engine with service history, complete with everything needed to run it.
Apologies for the thread 'jack.

just wanted to say I feel dumb now cos in a hypoid axle the oil wouldn't reach the pinion bearing, I was thinking of my minor. sorry.

From what I have read meshing and selection isnt much of a problem but accelarated wear is. Is the output of the S2000 gear box still in the opposite direction or is it reversed in the box? If it is still in opposite direction you could use the diff from an S2000 as well.

Thats a picture of an s2000 diff it looks to be set to run in normal direction. I know off acouple of lads who were building a sierra rally car with an S2000 engine and box and I am pretty sure that they never touched the diff so I presume the box must reverse the drive

s2000 goes the right way, so does the Kseries of engines. i want a f20c for my car, but after speaking to an engine tuner i might get a k20 from a civic and get a bellhousing made up, this is all future stuff when i have cashola.

S2000 runs the right way, and I am lead to believe that all Hondas from 2000 on run the right way as well..... 240hp 9000rpm and 10,000 mile service interval with a 100,000 mile warranty..... MY number one engine choice for anything at the moment ;D

i think the going rate for a engine box and ecu is £3k.... I was thinking of a whole on direct from one of my contacts in the salvage yards. £3k is a bit steep mind. stuff the weight, fit an e36 3.0 m3 lump in ;D 287bhp ;D I got 3 on the shelf ;D ;D
