Recently I bought a Mk1 106 XN- 1.1 Graduate model for a few quid as it had a blown headgasket. The car itself set me back a mere £75- rust free, straight body, generally all good so I bargain I think. Anyhoo, I've swapped the sick 1.1 for a 100hp 1.4 XSi engine (£300 plus about another £100 for fluids, some new tools and other sundries) with a 5-speed box (old one was a 4) and once a coolant fill-up has been done it's good to go. Thing is, it needs a couple of new tyres but I was intending to replace the stock suspension with GTi parts which means a change from 3 stud to 4 stud. At the moment I haven't got hold of the parts nor the time to do it- plus obviously I want to try out my engine handiwork! My question to you nice folk is can I replace the 13" steels with balloon tyres with something a little bigger that's still three stud? I know the handling isn't going to be great but the car has SPAX on it already so it should be a little tidier than stock but rolling on 155/70/13"s it's not going to have a lot of grip so I'd like to replace them with 14"s or 15"s so when I get the tyres I can get some decent ones that I can transfer to the 4 stud wheels when I get round to doing the 4 stud conversion. As it's a strictly beer budget motor I just want some steels or cheap alloys but all the better spec Pugs use 4 stud. Any thoughts? Long thread for a simple question...

There are some very cool 3-stud wheels around,.. AlpineAndy usually turns up some every so often in the ebay or wheels threads.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Erikamini's husband had a spare set of 14" three-stud alloys a while back, for his Samba Rallye. Similar to the ones in HoTWire's post. Trouble is he's in Poland for xmas so I can't have a word with him!

i have a 106 diesel as a day to day car (ho hum!) but its a 4 stud. i would have a look round some yards and see if you could get hold of some hubs and a beam. should not cost as much as 3 stud alloys and probably not take too long to swap round. while your there you could get some 15" steels! rallye look?

Thanks for all the help. I think going 4 stud is the way forward as any 3 stud alloys are going to be a few hundred £ + so I'd rather buy a full suspension set up from a warmer model and then just go with steels.
I'm keeping the outside stock complete with camp Graduate stripes so some steels would complete the sleeper look.
Although I know it's not going to be that much of a flyer but 100hp in a poverty spec lightweight body should surprise a few folks. Especially if it's armed with Mk 2 Gti handling ;D

Well, the reason I want to change the wheels is because of the high profile tyres on them at the moment but I guess there's nothing to stop me going for new lower profile 13" tyres all round and decking it Euro 'stylee'.
I had a Quiksilver as my first car- nice little motor. Only had it 9 months as I bought it new and managed to wrack up 20k in it in that time! Traded it in for a 206... now that was a POS!!

The 206 broke down the first day I had it- and it was brand new so we didn't get off to a good start together. It was just a completely different car to the 106- whereas the 106 was darty and old skool hatch type fun the 206 was softer and more grown up and consequently not as fun to terrorise the back-roads with. Plus the 2' had a load of unlocatable rattles- got a 328i after having that just 6 months.
I'm not too on the insurance- I got a year's free when I bought it. Think it was about £1200 at the time but I was only 19.
