Tell me about: Marina Coupe's SWMBO has seen a Marina Coupe, 1972. Want to buy it for her xmas, however I'm a Ford slag so....:
Bad bits to look for? Weakness's on engine/body? Parts availability? Will Ford alloys fit? (-coz she wants a set I have in the garage).
Cheers Paul

Technically it's not a coupe.... it's a 2 door saloon but BL never let detail get in the way. Anyways.... not big on Marinas but Ford alloys deffo will NOT fit. Only posted on this to tell you your Mk1 Granny pickup looks the dogs b0ll0 X. Have you posted more pix!

arnt marinas 4x98? whereas most ford is 4x108 (not sure of 5 stud ford) guess you could get adaptors made.. or even have the hubs and drums redrilled..., or dependant on wheels drill em to fit...

Anyone any info on the car itself/

Marina are 4x3.75 inch pcd, same as some triumphs and mgf. They rust everywhere, but in particular the front wings above the head lights, where the wings join the A posts, sills, rear arches and rear lower corners. Mechanically they are pretty robost, the only weak point is front suspension if the trunions have not been greased and worst case can cause the suspension to collapse. Gearboxes and diffs can whine but still go on for years. Drive train parts are still quite easy to get but body panels are getting scarce, especially front wings. The best thing is to buy the best car you can find as it is much cheeper than trying to bring a rough car up to scratch. Prices are starting to creep up but good cars can still be had for little money. Check out www.fastmarinamagazine.com there a good bunch and there is lots of usefull info.

Hellooooo ;D Actually with the Ford alloys, they could fit if you manage to find hubs off an Australian assembled model (like mine, but probably not possible in britain) As the Aussie models have the 4X108 stud pattern. Bad bits to look for are the same as with most old fords, as has been said rear arches go quite easily, also front wings. Parts are readily available if you search hard enough, not too rare yet partswise. I also recommend www.fastmarinamagazine.com as they are always helpful.

My Dad had one when I was a kid, must be late 70's,....think it could have been a TC? It was blue with a beige interior.
Traded it in for a nearly new Ital in 1982 ;D

Main thing to do is check EVERYTHING where the body is concerned, these are typical 70's cars so rustproofing isn't great. Worst bits are bottoms of the A pillars (stonechip damage), rears of the sills by the rear wheels, rear suspension mounts (Club do full replacements), spare wheel well and the fuel tank. Front and rear screen seals can leak but are available from East Kent Supplies, all interior bits are only available secondhand (apart from carpets), but mechanically they are OK. Engine parts are easily available (but be prepared to pay MG scene tax), gearboxes and axles are Triumph based, front suspension can be a problem if they haven't been looked after but salvation is at hand with 'Walford Trunnions'; these are re-engineered to make the steering lighter and stronger. I have them on both my cars and even my Ital with 195/50 tyres and the 1700 lump in still steers sweetly. First job will be to fit 175-wide tyres a.s.a.p as this will give instantly better handling and kill understeer. Also make sure the shocks are tip-top nick..... One word of warning; I know Marinas are supposed to have understeer but the coupe, being lighter at the rear than the saloon will swap ends faster than a Pug 205..... great fun if you're ready for it! As one Club member put it, a Marina is a rear-drive car that handles like a front-drive car.... Have fun!

Good news is the 1.8 has a close ratio gearbox - 1st is 3.11:1, even the 1.3 has a 3.44 1st gear. :-)
Gearbox and diff are shared with Triumph Dolomite 1850 (not Sprint!) and early TR7. 1.3 is A-series, easily upgraded with Mini Cooper or Midget/Sprite bits. 1.8 is B-series, TC is MGB spec (except for cast crank).
Electrics and switchgear is all standard BL Lucas.
Lowering 2-3" is easy - lowering blocks on the rear springs (Escort easily modded to fit), and front torsion bars have adjusters (and splines can be rotated if need be). :-)
Dolomite alloys bolt on, or TR7/8 alloys (13x7 Minilites look the dogz plums).
