First of all....I LOVE this forum, I have been here since it started, but I know squat about cars, just someone that watches top gear etc which is why I haven't registered before as I have nothing to say or add Anyway I currently drive an automatic 1995 Mercedes E280 (w124) and FOOKIN love it ;D I had a mini for 4 years (91 Mayfair 998cc that I fitted a stage one kit to) and needed something with a little more room and a bit more reliability, I did love it, but it pales into a weak position compared to the Mercedes as it CONSTANTLY had stupid problems from all the usual rust etc to a myriad of banging and knocking noises. I sold the mini for £2000 and bought the Benz for £2500, its done about 150,000 miles now so I know it hasn't got too many more left in it before it gets REALLY expensive but WOW, I was driving a 2.8 litre Mercedes Benz through my student years HELL YES! Err yeah, getting back on topic.... I’m 23 and have 5years no claims, so insurance shouldn’t be too much of a problem, I'm moving soon and my situation is changing, i.e. I’m not going to be able to maintain the Mercedes as the repair costs would cripple me:( and if I have to do any more miles than I currently do that will also cripple me And I know that you lot know your cars….. So the requirements are: RELIABILITY Four seater Cheap to maintain Character would be nice, as I loved the nippy mini Doesn’t have to be retro but I’m ready to think “outside the box” Preferable a fairly large car as I’m 6' 2" and I love the room in the Mercedes. Oh and preferably automatic, as unfortunately when I drive its normally because I NEED to lately rather than just to play:( So DO WHAT YOU DO BEST, SUGGESTIONS WITH PICTURES ;D

Why not do something with .... .......Your Merc ! After all it's now 10 year old and whatever you do to it, it wont 'devalue it now'. That way you've 'had a bit o fun with it' before it has to go which you seem to think it will Just a thought

hey mr underworld... oh wow... did u sing born slippy??? hero worship... i know it aint auto but you'd have lots of fun in a skoda rapid or estelle bit enough - I'm 6ft and don't feel cramped, economical, 4 seats/4 doors, and of course retro charm etc... just getting a decent one for reliability is all, but check out ebay, couple of lovely motd ones on there. once you get one youll not look back, trust me, ex ford escort and seat arosa driver here! new curse word doesnt compare if it must be auto, I'm gonna stick my neck on the line and say a 525 or similar mid 90s round light bmw saloon... a quick decking (from b&Q!) and some bbs alloys and not only cool and practical but retro and stunning! reliable as ever, just not as ecnomoical but sure who cares lol

Triumph dolomite sprint.---god that's tempting...hmmmm TwincamGTi Been thinking about perhaps having a "play" with the merc, defiantly needs slamming into the grass and alloys as I only have basic hubcaps , I’ll dig some pictures out and maybe create a new post to see what suggestions are made as to what could be achieved, as I haven’t seen any decent w124 mods, plus I actually think I could probably sell it for about £2000 again as its in pretty good nick, so I don’t really want to go too mad, though that of course remains to be seen. ;D I may yet keep it, all depends on running costs etc, I’d like to really as its been a great car, but running costs are starting to get high, and they are not going to go down surprisingskoda- unfortunately no I didn’t sing born slippy as for the car I’m pretty flexible really, doesn't have to have ALL my desires, but a couple would be nice, i.e. a great car that was cheap could be manual, the only reason that I like auto's of late is the fun factor, seems dumb as there’s nothing greater than dumping the clutch, but autos seem more versatile FOR MY PERSONAL SITUATION i.e. I’m having to use the car more and more and when I do its nice not to think “am I going to get there?” or getting a tired left foot from a heavy clutch. Hence a reliable auto would be nice. But I have to say I'm already very tempted by ALL the suggestions, the 525 would probably cost about the same to run as the Mercedes though, so that’s probably out, but the skoda is defiantly on the possibility list, and certainly that triumph is ;D KEEP ‘EM COMIN’! ;D

Go with the Merc i'd say (good point twincamGTI), only a matter of time till everyone starts searching for one and value goes up (plus sometimes better the devil you know). get some pics up and people here wont be short of suggestions. you could always go LPG conv Unless you fancy a change that is...

Nissan 300C saloon, got all the toys you're used to in the Merc. Square J-taxi looks, but same basic engine as a 300ZX. Plenty of scope for modding beyond the predictable lowrider look.

WOW me want ;D
Going to wait though (sensible head on) Have to wait till i finish uni, but i really fancy one of those, bit of character and i imagine pretty reliable. I'll need to do my homework on them and see whether they are going to suit me.
whats the deal though? is it a 240 series or something, i.e. that ebay link has a 245, so is it like the E280 where you can get the same car with a bigger engine E300 or its it like the 190e where the number is its designation (name)
