I love finding photos of old 70's dealerships, makes me sad when they get knocked down for exclusive developments of executive homes. Here's a bit of shameless nostalgia, I'd love to see more.... I was messing around here. StuyIzz will know where this was taken, and may even remember my old 200L MGV as it lived in Ipswich for many years. Had quite a few ex-Boltons cars. They later became a Citroen dealers, site now old people's housing. Ad taken from AA Drive magazine, 1980. The sign says Trustworthy Used cars - hmmm, really? Bet that Alpine was already rattling away, and a Maxi for £2995?! I like the Monza/Royale coupe and Transit camper. Spot the Corolla estate in the second row? Don't know when I've ever seen one of the road. From an old issue of What Car?

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

I do remember the Boltons site but only as a Citroen dealership, my dads old BX was from there. Davyboy was living just up the road from the retirement flats last year but I reckon he would have prefered it if they still had loads of old datsuns there instead ;D. Do you have any pics of the old Vauxhall garage that was on spring road in ipswich? as I loved that building with its Huge curved windows (Bloody flattened last year for some "Executive flats" ) . The old 50's style Ford and VW Buildings are still hanging in there (for now) near the football ground, love the way they had extra parking on the roof.

Saddened by that, as you say it was quite a cool building - I lived further up Spring Road so used to see it very often. On the left of it there was another garage where they did hire cars, that gone too? Think that was VW many years ago. Anyone know the wine shop in the middle of the Boundary traffic island in Norwich? Got empty flats over it. That used to be a dealership, opened in the late 50's/early 60's. Did some work there - chap showed us some great old photos, Stirling Moss at the opening. Car hire place across the road used to be Toyota dealers in the 70's I believe. Other than the obvious reasons, this stuff interests me as I have done drawings for a few new/remodelled car dealerships - done 3 Toyota sites, now working on a Hyundai extension. My employers do survey and design work for buildings, and it always saddens me when I hear one of our clients is developing an old garage site.

its pics like that make me think i reallly was born in the wrong era!! I grew up in the 70's, so I vividly remember being taken to garages like that Wadham Stringer place. Thing is, what I saw back then was just what you saw everywhere, so you don't think it anything too special at the time. iRocco, does this picture help you? Another shot of the one pictured above. This place is Supreme Autos in Halifax, taken from an ad in Motor Sport about 1980. They've lined up the sporty stuff out front, but lurking in the background there's a Renault 15/17, an Alfasud, some of BL's finest and a Commer van. This sight would have greeted you in a late 70's Datsun dealership. I think most of this Pardat stuff was British sourced - the wheels are Goodyear/KN and possibly 100+ Octavo.

Fantastic pics! I love this sort of stuff. Ahh happy memories of wandering round dealers like those when I was a kid, putting grubby fingerprints on the windows and nicking loads of brochures when the salesmen weren't looking

Does anyone know the small garage in a hamlet south of Cardigan that now has about 30 Moriarty Minors outside it?

Keep stumbling across things for this thread. This line-up is at Weir Lodge Garage in Chertsey, Surrey, from Motor 1968. This is a Renault depot in Blackfriars Road, Manchester. Gone now I suppose? Lots of 8s and 10s, plus one Dauphine. Love a building like that myself.......

Jezuz yeah, so it is, before my time but i recognise this as halifax mortorshow, or more recently eurekar, or something, a play on thelocal kids museum eureka! there was summat dodgy about it cant remember what, either bent cars, or an arson issue! not far from my old house that, always checked out if i could afford owt while i was ont bus, i couldn't.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Great stuff!
I recently got a Heritage Certificate for my Oxford as a birthday present and it says it was supplied by Stewart and Arden in Acton, only about 5 miles from where I live! I'm trying to get the address sop I can see if the building is still there and take it home..

I'm trying to get the address sop I can see if the building is still there and take it home.. FACTOID ALERT! Stewart & Arden was England's largest Morris dealership, with 8 London showrooms and two in adjacent counties, plus a large repair shop in Acton and a subsidiary engaged in coachbuilding. Most of the car showrooms had a small filling station in front selling a range of petrol brands, as was common at the time. Stewart & Arden remained active as a BMC/British Leyland dealer in London, but the name no longer exists in Britain; a couple of Rover dealers in SW France still use this old English name! There you go.
