My wife should be passing her test soon and she wants a little 4x4. Will be mainly used for nipping about here and there but will involve country lanes, farms, stables etc cos she's into horses ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) What should we be looking for? She likes swb land rovers but she may also want to do the odd long trip, maybe even from sheffield to essex, so i wouldnt have thought a land rover would be such a great idea. What about suzuki SJ's or fourtracks? Are they a bitt better on the road? Better cruising speeds etc? Any other options we should be looking for? Doesnt have to be a serious off roader, no rock crawling or anything, but very rough tracks and fields need to be handled with reletive ease.

Late Lada Niva 1.7? Sport track? All of them will be a bit agricultural on the motorway I guess.

already showed her niva's but she's not too keen.
Ill check out sport tracks though too.
It would never see serious motorway use, but if she ever needed to go se her folks for any reason it would be nice if the car would do it reasonably comfortably (i.e. not at 50mph with a strong likelyhood of breaking)

Much as I love sj's I reckons they would be also tiresome long hall, so old scoobie doo 4wd?, pretty rare now as many rotted but other car based 4wd may be a better option. How about 2cv, apparently pretty handy off-road and certainly a bit special ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

don't think a 2cv will cut it for her.
Tried subaru brats but she says 'looks like a boat'
having trouble finding anything that suits better than an SJ, but i know nothing about them. What would they cruise at?
The old sit up and beg sidevalve ford was going to be her car so it doesnt have to be too refined ;D
Also looking for something that can be got for sub £1k
If SJ's are no better than land rovers then what about four tracks?

I used to blast around in a Sportrack a few years back. Pretty nippy, especially after me and my bro modified the air intake - it made a massive difference! Handling took some getting used to, just because I was so used to being closer to the ground. Had nifty electronically adjustable dampers which made a fair difference when on faster roads.

Diahatsu Fourtrack and SWB Mitsubishi Shogun are the two reliable, easy to take care of proper off-roaders. Of course the engine size may be an issue if shes just passing the test!
Suzuki SJ a bit agricultural - a Jimny will be a bit more refined and still fairly capable (and cutesy)
However I'd think about a Subaru Legacy/Forrester or Sierra 4x4 Estate, Golf Country if you can find one. Unless it's also for towing, these will be the manageable ones (fuel, insurance...) Panda 4x4 maybe?
If you do go big engined, but want something cheap and road-friendly, consider a Ford Maverick/ Nissan Terrano SWB, or an Isuzu Trooper/Vauxhall Frontera SWB. Would probably take the Shogun over those though, although a little dearer, but for good reason.

I'm currently looking for the same sort of thing. Currently on my list are Cherokee, Frontera SWB, Terrano and Freelander. Nivas are unstoppable off road, but I would rather lick a dead donkeys scrote than drive one on road for any length of time. I have no experiance of SJ`s but I would imagine they arent too hot on road either.
