Me and a mate at work where discussing the new Bugatti on Top Gear that puts out 1000 BHP. My mate is a J car fanatic and he said that he was not impressed with the Bugatti as there are a few Skyline putting out more power.
The thing is if this is true how does the transmission hold up when the Bugattis gearbox took ages to design? How long do these 1000 BHP Skylines last before they blow up? Or are these Skylines track use only?

I bet they don't last long, come with a factory warranty or are designed for continent-bashing long distance cruising There's a reason why they cost five million quid each to build!

yeah, i was thinking the same, theres clearly the power there, but they are no where near as refined as the buggatti. every aspect of the bug was designed with a kilobrake in mind from day one. the skylines probably been designed with 3-400 topps, and thats if theyve been overengineered quite considerably.
don't get me wrong, id love a blast in one, but it wouldnt be as pleasnat and as controllable to drive as the bugatti

I've heard on a few occasions that those Skyline's can take a lot of abuse, but 1000bhp must be pushing it a bit. That said, those Top Gear chaps often ignore some very fast cars (from the drag/custom scene) when they talking about the 'fastest road legal cars'.

they only have that much power cos they wack a whopping great turbo on them, then there is no power to the ground and they end up curse word cars! see on a drag strip a 1000bhp rice burner will only do a 12 second pass or something, because the wheels just spin because the builder hasnt thought about all the other things that need doing, hes just worried how loud his blow off valve is!

skyline with 1000bhp usually have a expensive uprated gearkit. its a pretty tough box anyway (a popular swap into big power escort cossies) ...remeber seeing an hks r32 with a sheeeit load of power, but thatgearbox wasnt exactly friendly dog engagement.
where as the bugattis could be driven by anyone.
and regarding that comment above...thats pretty stupid, seeing as andy barnes r34 doesnt have 1000bhp and runs 9second quarters.

Steve Patemans Calibra was used in comparison in the top gear magazine review of the Bugatti, but I don't think Clarkson had anything to do with that article!
That's a great photo above. The Calibra looks so tiny on US roads.

One other difference with the skylines is they don't have anywhere near the same amount of torque as the Bugatti. There are plenty of gearboxes around that can take 1000bhp but the bugatti box was designed with a lot of specific requirements.

Yep, the Skylines and the Supras with 1000bhp+ are very powerful, and very torquey, but nothing compared to the Veyron. Plus as they are either race or top speed engines they will gt at least stripped and inspected every couple of thousand if not hundred miles. Although there are some very silly 2.5 litre Scooby engines and 2.2 litre evo engines that are getting close to 800 and 900bhp and designed to be street driven, if a little compromised drivability wise.

if a little compromised drivability wise. That is the key I think,.. the Bugatti is without compromise, which is why it's so expensive to build. Whereas the drag cars and race cars are built with a purpose... even fast street cars compromise on many things, whereas the Bugatti has to be able to do everything well, and be reliable! Wonder what the service costs are on one of those.

Penski...... might wanna rewrite those stats of yours too.... Reece McGregor recently took the title of New Zealand's quickest Import when he ran a, get this, 7.92@256km/h!!!! And he was backing off...... as a side note, the box he is running is a Liberty air-shifter, not really street material..... His main adversary, a chap by the name of Glenn Suckling, ran an 8.22 @ 271 km/h!!!!! The worlds fastest GT-R is HKS Japan's R33, which has ran a 7.671. These cars however are ummm, well, not particularly street friendly. These guys are using nitrous once staged, just to get those massive turbos spooling!!!!! There was that 1520hp JZA80 Supra on EBay recently as well..... street legal 8 second passes from a 2wd!

Does anyone else find these 1000bhp skylines etc. just a little bit 'spinal tap'

Yeah the key is definatly in the streetability, the skylines will have to have very strong gearboxes to cope with 1000bhp, ricardo had a nightmare on its hands when doing the veyron box. A 1000bhp skyline will have as much torque as the veyron, the difference is where it arrives, the veyron will be spooling hard right off idle where as the skyline itll arrive all at once! BANG! As for gearboxes that are made to take the power, my favorite has to be a street lenco capable of taking all the torque you can throw at it and clutchless shifts = supa cool which one do i pull? J

meeni in da house: on a drag strip a 1000bhp rice burner will only do a 12 second pass or somethingYou are just soooo way out there, get your stuff straight before...... Here in Sweden we have Rickard Cornacchini aka SupraMannen that constantly are doing low 9's with his just around 1000hp Supra, I even think they tested the car in Getaway in Stockholm 6. I have seen his car both on the street and strip and I know that ride is fast, I have heard that he has been down on high 8's but not beeing able to back it up with a second run.... SupraMannen Racing: www.supramannen-racing.com/Saying that 1000hp+ J Cars ar'nt fast is just not correct.....

Surely this thread is a good excuse for someone to post a pic of the Andromeda rod? That reputedly had 1000bhp.
Quick googling didn't turn anything up other than a load of sci-fi weirdness.

I have to agree, comments around 'rice burners' is rubbish, take a look at this site, we like american muscle just as much as we like our crazy japmobiles. There is very little discrimination unless its for minilights, they are bad.

skyline with 1000bhp usually have a expensive uprated gearkit. its a pretty tough box anyway (a popular swap into big power escort cossies) I only know of one cossie which has run this conversion and that was Sean Bicknells from Zoo Motorsport The Bugatti has to pass VW strict engine reliability policy which means running for something like a month flat out on a test rig. A 1000bhp Skyline engine has to be looked after and nursed, I would guess you'd be looked at a 5-10K running life before a rebuild? I beleive the old Jun Superlemon is now in Wolverhampton and owned by a chap called Deano, or at least it was.
