cr500dom in da house: All ready for flame paint now
And after that it's just to place it on the shelf since it looks like it's a plastic helmet and painting it with something other than water based acrylics it will make the shell soft and it woun't protect like it would unpainted. I sell Motorcycle helmets and have seen some helmets that have been painted and gone soft, way to soft to protect like it should. A fibre glass och carbon mix helmet can be painted with about anything, it actually makes the helmet stronger since you give it an extra layer. All plastic composite helmets should NOT be painted unless it's done with water based acrylics, I have a painter who specialize in this stuff he does hockey goalies mask & helmets but the paints are expensive to buy and verry hard to work with.....
Have I painted a plastic helmet??? Yes and I have used it riding BMX & mopeds but it's nothing I'll recomend to anyone and my GF has only the best helmets for riding bikes, mopeds, horses and her Moto 6.5 because I love her.....
On the topic of flames and your job, it looks way cool, well done!!!!!!

I was beginning to wonder about this when I saw someone paint a helmet. Apparantly some stickers 'sticker substance' can also cause problems.

That is right but some of the stickers from Fox, UFO, Acerbis and others that make MX and other bike parts have "helmet safe" glue and it usually says so on the back of the stickers.....
We should not get to "anal" about this, sure a palstic helmet can be damaged by glue in stickers and paint although a sticker is less likely to soften a halmet to the extent of beeing dangerous but painting is questionable.....

Very nice flames. But I have to agree, hot paints, ie solvent based, are not a good idea on headgear. Apart from softening the plastics initially, when the solvent does eventually evaporate, I believe I'm right in saying that the plastic can be brittle thereafter.
Love the flames though!

Well as usual, the pics don't do the pearls justice, but here we go.... Still needs to harden off before Flatting and polishing but you get the general Idea Paint used was Pactra Acrylic (As used on RC Lexan bodies) and an Acrylic laquer over the top Was a quick job so no pinstriping to the edges, but I was rather pleased with it ;D

Of course, RC paint. Top marks for knowing what you're doing. Those flames have come out nice. My airbrush needs a clean, I'm getting itchy finger....and I've got a pinstriping kit under the Christmas tree!
