Wondering if anyone can help - the daily drive is insanley reliable (to the point I have never had to do anything to it other than change the oil and pads over the past 8 years). After many many years of use I still have absolutley no idea what engine code it is and what carb it has fitted? Can anyone tell me? Also the engine is now pinking a bit - comes and goes depending on fuel purchased. I have a suspect TPS which I know I need to replace but wondering if there are other common fails on this engine that could cause the pinking? The Haynes manual of lies states the ignition timing can only be done by VW and I know its never been touched - so wondering if there is another dicky sensor? Any help / advice is appreciated. Cheers James

is this mk2 or 3? that looks like a singlepoint injection... (no carb) arnt they 1.6?
and timing should be a case of find out how far BTDC it needs to be... get a timing light and slacken off the dizzy and turn it until the light lines up the marks on the pulley and block (make sure you get the right ones and not the tdc marks)

it has to be a mk3 at least,mk2 didnt go spi. the engine number will be in a few places. firstly there are two white square stickers, one should be in the boot, passenger side near the rear panel, but in practice could be anywhere in the boot.the other sticker went into the service book.what you will be looking for is a two or three letter code on the lh side near the bottom of the sticker.it will be on the front of the block stamped into a machimed flat just below the head gasket line but its hard to read as A it gets dirty and rusty and B the stat housing and pipes get in the way.it MAY be on the sticker on the cambelt cover, but thats not 100%.
my guess its a 1.6.code AEA. ;D

Ahh sorry forgot to say its a 1.8 Mk3. We have had untold issues with getting bits for this car, on numerous occasions Euro's and VW have both drawn blanks with parts. It seems its a VW parts bin - last of line N plate Mk3.
Ah, my bad I thought it was carbed but single point injection makes sense - only reason why I thought it was carbed is because thats what a local VW specialist advised - never really looked under the bonnet to ever query! Boringly reliable!
I have checked everywhere for an engine code, but will have another scan.
Retro, was going to check the ign timing - got a new timing light on order, but the Haynes manual implied that it couldnt be set up with VW main dealer toys? Cant see why not but some curse word about the timing is constantly changing etc?!

had one of these engines in a vento before, timing is possible with a strobe light i do believe, and i know how hard it is getting parts for it is too! Never try getting a alternator belt for it.

Well I finally managed to find the engine code – it’s an ADZ.
Doing some googling it runs of Bosh Monotronic Single Point injection and it does seem that Haynes are right about not being able to adjust the ignition timing as it is locked in place. I know the diz certainly hasn’t been touched so I can’t see why it would now be out now – hence my thought that some sensor or other which is causing the problem. Going to look at the hall sensor and check if it has a crank sensor – maybe these are up the chuff?
Now I know it’s a Monotronic SPI I can go about trying to find a second hand TPS for it to see if that helps the problem.

I've just bought one of these - same colour by the looks of it too!
Mines a 1.8 'ABS' Monotronic engine. Other than what's already been mentioned as a last resort I'd try the cam timing too. Unclip the upper timing cover, and there should be a mark on the camshaft pulley that corresponds with a mark on the upper cover. Then whip the dizzy cap off, and check that the rotor arm lines up with a notch on the distributor body.
The haynes book of lies says the cam belt should be able to twist 90 degrees over its longest stretch
