This is the way I see it, pretty much the same as tri: AE86 Levin, probably running about 180bhp, RWD, fun, therefore win: Modern EVO, probably about 320bhp, AWD, fun, therefore win: My 40bhp Mini, FWD, fun, therefore win: I appreciate the leaving junctions sideways thing, but all cars are fun, no matter what transmission or power they run, as proven by my weedy FWD above ;D Hmmm, I wonder if there's any side wheel drive cars, other than tanks lmao

i believe for driving round town and stuff, (what most people who stress on the rwd- fwd point do) there is nothing better then a fwd, where as if you enjoy alitle bit of twisties then rwd is your mate. infact driving around town i actualy don't mind a fwd or a rwd but on a track i realy do last time i drove the saab it was a nightmare!

I use to be a proper RWD snob but I got bored if it all. I really hate it when people see simple "ordinary" cars with no sporting pretence, like my T72 1.6 LX Bluebird, and they're like "OMG FWD teh failz etc" FFS, it's a nice simple comfy sturdy car that wil run forever and even I can usually figure more or less how it works.
I also hate it when people say FWD = understeer. FWD = understeer because manufacturers want understeer. Ask any chassis dude, FWD can oversteer if ncessary. Just not on the throttle.
edit: plus there's nothing worse than a bad RWD chassis. My S12's rear bushes are fooked so I get snap oversteer, making fast, steady-state corners absolutly terrifying and I'm not joking or bing soft lol. Ask any Beetle owner who's experienced the notorious "tuck-in/positive camber" effect.

The only RWD cars I've experienced are E36 318 BMW's which weren't particularly fun. But then again, what isn't fun to me will no doubt be to someone else. In the FWD stakes, my 106 XSi (which when stripped out completely weighed no more than 750kg, coupled to a 125bhp GTi engine, was quite awesome and terrifying with lift off oversteer at the same time! And in the AWD, my dad's Impreza T is a hell of a weapon from point to point, but then again it's not much fun to drive unless you are REALLY taking it to the limit. The point in my rambling really is what has been said many times in this thread, a car is as fun as you want it to be.

Has anyone ever wondered how it feels to live like a chav? Then buy my Corsa XE and go around shouting at people!

In terms of oversteer/understeer, it makes little difference.
If you want to put down more than about 200 bhp, then you could probably use RWD.
I don't like torque steer - it masks feedback from the wheels - so I prefer RWD.
When Alec Issigonis drove an Imp, he told one of the Imps' designers (I can't remember if it was Fry or Parkes now) that it was "brilliant, but you've got it the wrong way round". He went on to say that the Mini, was like a dart - very stable. The Imp designer responded by saying that darts don't go round corners. The debate went on for quite some time, but didn't really get any further than that.

I'll throw this out there... two of the top 4 fastest cars on the RRG09 sprint were FWD and i'm pretty sure we were all having equal 'fun' Erm, and the second slowest was FWD............and the slowest was RWD. ;D It seems the debate will rumble on and on, and with some ariston even if we take The Gathering as our context.

When it all goes wrong FWD leaves the front wheels spinning in the muddy ditch trying to climb out and RWD leaves the back ones doing that same hopeless task. So by this argument it's 4WD FTW ;D Variety they say, is the spice of life and every kind of driven wheeled vehicle has and will continue to provide me great pleasure, be it the past glories of my go-cart nimble mk1 metro, the silliness of sliding the Transit round a wet roundabout racetrack or trying to find the apparently non existent limitations of a Suzuki SJ. It's all good. Do agree that tire smoke looks a whole lot more right at the back though.

Bloody slippy out this morning, fine mist of rain on the roads, had the jag understeering AND oversteering at various points, both on the same corners a couple of times.

Slippy last night too, had a quick play on the way back from dropping a work colleague off. Couldn't do that in a FWD car - soooo much fun!

IMHO RWD is better. Why?
Wheels are stupid things and should only be allowed to do one thing at a time...
