We were planning on making some cider again this year, but didn't think to actually go and check the apples until last Sunday, when we quickly decided that it had to be done RIGHT NOW as they were falling off the trees. So we hurriedly got together some demi johns.. We also got a few 27 litre buckets for good measure, then went out to get them apples, some of this was achieved by the hi-lux drive by method, whereby girls stand in the back of a Toyota and are driven into apple trees! About 25 feedbags later we decided we had enough to be getting on with. This is the cider press we made from what we thought was pretty solid pine... (yes that is kitchen worktop) So, first of all we get someone on the scrattler, which is a wooden drum with hundreds of nails hammered into it that connects via pto to this renault tractor, then spins round ripping up the apples an depositing them in a big tank. You scoop the mashed up apples from the other end using a big stick Then using some net curtains, you squash the apples with a 12 ton bottle jack! This scene looks quite productive really. Then, using authentic bulmers demi johns you collect the murky apple/wasp/sheep curse word juice Some expert advice form Ralph on the best scrattling methods And here's a little bit of cider in waiting..

That is a lot of cider. I've made 2 gallons this year and felt that was a fair bit!
Take it you're relying on natural yeast and sugars, nothing added? Will you filter before bottling on is the occasional wasp part of real scrumpy? ;-)

Well, it is kind of filtered, the mashed up apple is wrapped up as 'cheeses' in net curtains, we put a square of wood down in the press, line it fith net curtain, add the mash, fold the curtain over then slide the wooden square up, you can get three of these cheeses in a stack before you press it. The only thing left in the juice is sediment, which I think you need for the natural yeast. I have some cider yeast which I might try out on one of the buckets, it does 27 litres and claims to produce a 'crisp, sharp cider'. Otherwise we usually just leave it for a year or so in the shed to do it's stuff!

what a waste of lovely apples... could have made some 'Calvados' Apple Brandy! You need cider in the first place! Apple brandy usually uses around a 7% cider as a base, you distill this around 5 times, ending up with a liquor of about 68%. You let this sit for a few years, 4% of the alcohol a year is lost through evaporation out the barrels and eventually you have a 40% apple brandy. If only I had an illegal still and enough cider I would certainly attempt it..

At a wild guess the tractor is a Renault. Yes, was the renaulty yellow colour scheme a giveaway? Still, there's a couple of retros hiding away in there. Granted one of them is under an old carpet.....

Spotted the Sierra.
There's also something - to the left of the tra'or in the first pic of the Scrattler - with a red stripe across it's bum. Got no idea what it is though.

Although it is a p100 truck, but from the front who would know! And, under the carpet, behind the orange trailer is a lime green morris marina twin carb 'Jubilee' edition. It was a bit hard that one.

arzebiskitz. I nearly put a bit about it possibly being a P100. Ah, well.
I've now realised that the thing I wrote about with the read stripe is the pickup...
