So I've got an A series engine and box here that are chock full of bits of copper that used to be my big end bearings, that need cleaning outside and in. I half considered buying a cheap parts washer, but I've got a big plastic tub, an old pond pump and a sheet of perforated steel.
I plan to fill the plastic tub up about 4 inches deep with paraffin/petrol/environmentally sound cleaning fluid stick few bricks around the outside, the pond pump in the middle and the perforated steel on top of it all. The tub has a lid that seals on, so I could just clip the lid over and leave it.
I have slight worries about operating a pond pump in a flammable liquid though - Anyone got any suggestions for a non-flammable cleaning solution that isn't absolutely curse word (Like every alternative to stinky harsh solvents seems to be)

Always used curry tins to hold the enviro safe chems and old paint brush ;D So order a helluva ruby and this should be big enough, I can offer curry eating service's too . In all seriousness check the plastic don't melt I've fallen foul of this before.

i saw one made out of a beetle fuel tank... any other metal tank should do, or an old kitchen sink with an electric pump....

Just be VERY careful with the dishwasher trick! Having read about it in previous posts I gave it a go. . . BIG mistake There was obviously some old engine oil left on the bits and that thinly coated the ENTIRE insides of the diskwasher. All the white plastic turned to motled grey. Despite numerous washes, it never cleaned off and eventually SWMBO demanded a new dishwasher It would have been cheaper to buy a proper parts washer!

My Clarke parts washer seems to have virtually idential pump to the small pond one I used for draining my dinghy. I'd use it without hessitation as the mains aspect is completley sealed.

I wonder if you got a cheap dishwasher second hand, could you run a bit of petrol or white spirit or something through it, to really get metal filings and oil and grease and all off.

we have a parts washer we use at work that uses a 240v central heating pump and have used evrything from parrafin to jizer through it it has been used daily for many years i remember having to replace the pump that had gunked up after around 10 years of use the new pump has been used for about 5 years now and the old pump strted working again after a washout so there is an option.. it now has a pickup screen of mesh that helps..
need a retrictor which it our case is just a ball valve or stopcock to reduce the flow though as it can be a bit powerfull otherwise.. si

Everyone's a winner, surely? ;D Obviously wasn't an ideal situation but if you're glass is half full...

I got quite a few parts clean in the past but some soot covered bits from my engine bay fire turned the plastic bits grey. Took forever to get clean.
