Help! (and I know I'm on extremely 'dodgy' ground with this one ) A couple of other vehicle Forums (so this question is sort of vehcile related) I am on are deciding next January to have a (for want of a better description) subscription rate/membership fee for 'proper'/full membership 'rights'/use of complete forum. Is this necessary or (forgive me for thinking this) is someone 'on-the-make'? Hope I haven't 'stuck head in Lions Mouth' and I am glad this is a free Forum ,but also emphasise I'm not a 'skinflint' by nature, it's just I want to know why some need to charge! Sorry if the question offends but had no-one else to turn to on web to ask such a question Thanks for any advice

there is cost with running forums. if you don't have sponsors then the owner has to pay the bills. If you benefit from the forum, and you enjoy the forum, then i personally wouldnt have a problem with paying.
Think of this place. You don't even need to consider the bills, simply the free time HotWire puts into this place is immense. Personally, i think he deserves something for his efforts. I know many of us have offered to contribute before and i seem to remember him turning us down ....

I thought there was discussion of an optional payment for the 'revamp' - giving you a few little extras?

PassionFord and MIG both went over to this system a while ago. I pay £20 a year for 'Gold Membership' to PassionFord and I doubt I will be paying next year.
Before paying you really need to look at what the forum owners have got planned.

Volkszone works in a similar way sort of, for a one-off payment you get extra PM space and a few other upgrades.

yeah i paid for Volkszone a few years back, it was only £25 which i thought was anually but it doesn't seem to have run out! at the time it wasn't really for any extra features, it was just because it was such a huge site and i was posting so much and getting far more than £25 worth of fun out of it i thought it worthwhile i'd probably only pay for one forum at a time, i'm not on vzi that much at all now though.

I'm joining more forums, and only ones i'm glued to i'd be prepared to pay and hang around but then it may get like mag subs and put it off perhaps cos it could add up. HoTWire does a lot of great work here true keefy, and appreciate the bills need paying. However paid membership could put new folks off. So what are the other options in these situations?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

The forum remains free for all and you pay for further content on the site - a 'garage' of your own with a bit of image hosting, a 'project log' of sorts and so on...
The forum can still be used by all and sundry.

imo, for a forum to work well with subscription, the froum should still be public and viewed publically, but with extras added to those who pay. I'd happily pay for RR...whats the current feeling hotwire?

Okay folks the plan for me to carry on doing RR was this. Forum stays free, this is a must!. However on the main site I'd offer a blog facility for your projects (kind of like the Readers Rides, but better) that would also offer image hosting. Essentially those that join up/pay get value added content.
At the moment I want to sort out my new host and get the forum moved. Then I'm looking at what I can do to add more to the site.
The reason that people that run forums want money is because bandwidth costs! If you add into that the time spent dealing with the site. As well as any kind of promotional things (flyers, banenrs etc.) ... it all adds up.

A gardening forum that the O/H goes on had some problems over payment, basicaly there was a surplus over and above the cost of running the site that the administrator couldn't/wouldn't account for... I'm not suggesting for a moment that would happen here, just pointing out one posible pitfall. Anyway, it got sorted out in a uniquely British way... the ones who weren't happy went off and started their own site... (see also: 'Granada Clubs')

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
