"....you can hear the cars rusting in the fields of Dannevirke."
Well... hi guys! It's been a hell of a long time since I contributed anything meaningful to this board, even my projects have ground to a bit of a halt as I embark upon home ownership and all that grownup jazz... however, I still got the passion for old clapped out awesomeness. So I figured it'd be rude not to share this with the RR Community, all the way from erm, sunny New Zealand!
I'll warn now, anyone left on 56k internet please, this will cause your PC to haemorrage and eventually, keel over and depart this worldly entity. It's pic heavy, to put it simply.
To set the scene: Saturday afternoon a week and a bit ago, about 1300 hours. A small group of oldschool.co.nz members, located in the sunny climes of the MIIIGGGHTY Manawatu congregate to take a small journey, to a soggy paddock full of glorious rusting hulks of what used to be. So, after Trigger (EX Lancer of mintness) Sparkle (Datsun 620 of utilitarian capability) caboonatlarge/Ogre (LA Lancer of the used properly variety) and myself (KP Starlet of Hilux stance) had driven for around 45 minutes, we finally made it to our destination... Owned by a gentleman of eldery persuasion, this veritable treasure trove of motoring's days gone by was first happened upon by us about 3 years back now. This collection of photos marks our second visit as a collective, and I'm damn sure I want to go back there. Without further ado, I present.... Mister Boytes family fun time oxidisation hour!
What would a photo thread be, without some contrast though (snort, giggle, see what I did there?). Here's the lads cars lined up on some er, railway tracks, actually after the main event, chronological order is clearly not my strongpoint.
Mine's the red one that isn't blessed with a flatdeck ;D
Firstly, these panorama style shots give an idea of the scale. This is one mans hoard remember so that makes it even more impressive I reckon... and most of the shots following don't even include one of the main areas. There is THAT MUCH to take in and I only had limited batteries with me.
Singer Chamois peeking out from behind an early Ford Transit - one of my favourite shots.
Commer van with interesting signwriting still present on the drivers door
TK Bedford cab... I adore these things
I had trouble identifying this one... looked American was cut down into a ute. Plymouth, circa mid/late 50's perhaps?
The grille on this screamed Chrysler... was all loaded on a trailer ready to be towed away
KE25 Corolla! Well and TRUELY raped for parts, there wasn't anything useable left. Note the sly rotary conversion (giggle)
CA Bedford, a van the post office used and due to frequent accidents of the sliding doors closing on hands grasping the A pillar, were recipients of a warning to remind occupants to close the doors to prevent the abovementioned accidents (according to my old man, ex post office) There was an easy half a dozen of these out there.
HA Viva, quite a fan of these little cars myself.
Another HA, and a PA Vauxhall visible amongst a gaggle of rotten British runabouts.
A dejected Mark III Cortina cries for salvation.... if it could only squeeze past the....
...MS65 CROWN, another that's been picked over thoroughly for useful bits. Bet this looked awesome in rolling in silver during it's heyday.
Pieces of cars slowly returning to the earth... there's gotta be some rare pieces in that pile.
Another Mark III... impressively rusty. I think it might need some new steel welding in. Cracked me up how the fuel flap was intact.
It's a K series... you just know this 3K will turn over once you chuck some plugs in it and connect a battery. Dunno about it's performance on the CNG though (note lines around carb heading off to a regulator).
There were a couple of these old girls lying round too... I learned to steer on the smaller Fordson Dexta version (kinda like a Massey Ferguson 35)
Another Transit, in the foreground an unknown tank off a motorbike... maybe British/European, it was missing the kneepads and not too many J bikes had them from memory.
PB Vauxhall and some kind of old Brit commercial... Bedford/Karrier/Commer etc?
Austin Kimberley!!! 2.6l of transverse inline 6 madness. The ULTIMATE Landcrab IMO.
Vanguard (I think) trying to take off but mother earth is taking hold of it!
Not so good at identifying this one... anyone?
Another kick ass old commercial... probably hauled it's last heavy load many moons ago
A Humber laying quietly at rest.
Fiat 127 looking like it was in remarkably good shape, all things considered. Bizarre given it's Italian-ness.
This was on a Morris panel van type thing. Clearly intended for commercial usage.
HR Holden... I remember seeing these daily on the roads (just)
100E Ford. So cute!
My all time number one favourite vehicle in the place. Skoda 1200 or 1201 dating to the late 50's. There can't be too many of these around, rotting in paddocks or otherwise. Poor location made it hard to take decent pics of.
Wonder if these guys sold it new....?
A handy dandy conversion device found inside another PA Vauxhall. A wealth of relevant information at your fingertips, proudly presented by the Atlantic Union Oil Company (NZ) Ltd.
AP5 Valiant Safari. What a COOL car. Partly obscuring it is Hillman.
Side of the Safari showing that epically sweet windowline.
Apparently, once upon a time it had some voltage of dangerous quantities located in it's glovebox.
I dug this. NZ new and all!!!
A couple of shots of Brits lurking in the bushes... waiting... for what though? Kinda like these two shots.
This articulated truck still had the trailer hitched and all... someone just drove it down into the gully and left it to die.
The grille of a Bedford truck gallantly attempts to maintain it's dignity as it sinks earthwards.
At some stage these guys sold the 1st gen Hiace that this sticker was on.
ROSTYLE!!!! My dad had some of these on his '74 Marina 2.6.
[weak][lame]Consul. Needs consoling.[/lame][/weak]
Absolutely cannot believe someone would leave such a gorgeous car to just decay!!! I adore the P5's.
Imp sporting a ute conversion/hack that really defies any kind of logic.
Transit! Ideal for dispensing candy in.
EN Civic pretending it has wings!
J1 Bedford - these have a special place in my heart, I learned the craft of driving in one of these. This one was complete with Tridents/Slotmags and raised white letter tyres!
Bigger J series Bedford, J2 I think. Weathered motif on the bonnet states it's rocking 202ci of engine. Holden conversion perhaps?
Dodge(y) housebus was apparently driven on to the property and left where it was!
Falcon wagon rubs shoulders with a Peugeot 404.
Awesome old Thames Trader loaded up with a BMC 1800!
Token old petrol pump, finishing the post of rusty stuff off with a nostalgic bang!
Hope you all enjoyed
