Hi all well its getting close to making a decision on what will happen to the outside of this: You may remember the original thread where it was decided that my only option to save what paint is left is with a blow over... However in the mean time I visited Area 52 and some suggestions were made and ideas hatched so where I stand now is either: a) Respray in red.. it will be shiney and nice.. shuts under bonnet etc will match but will take a while to save up the readys. and while 'shiney' red mx5's look great they are pretty common. don't think i want to go for a colour change (as much as matt green might rock!) I don't want to get into the hassle and expense of getting the door shuts etc painted too, and i would want them to match.. or at least be close! b) Flock it in red. Obviously this will be a bit of a shock lol but have been quoted a good price, only worry is keeping it clean especially as my two mainly driven routes are muddy dirty country lanes Although I am assured its waterproof. Would likely have the bonnet done in super shiney black to offer a bit of relief from the satin of the flock.. plus guess the bonnet will be hottest bit so that might not enjoy being flocked! Sorry strangely enough couldn't find any pics of flocked cars! c) As seen at Area 52but all over the outside of my car... ;D (sorry Bruce i nicked your pic) Bonus will be its sure to be cheaper.. not often seen and has potential to be fab! I'm thinking of trying to aquire enough pics with red as the dominant colour to still have the car 'looking' red but with some extra interest clever use of pics etc could also allow for random colour fades, changes, stripes anything really. Downside will be applying it.. although I'm guessing impact adhesive and a good few coats of laquer with lots of buffing after would work.. cheaper also means I can afford my coilovers sooner.. which means low So what do you all think...? Thoughts, alternatives and votes appreciated.

Combination of a and c - shiny red, with bonnet and boot in Area 52 style, with a two-inch-wide matching collage strip down either side. Awesome.

how durable would flock be? OK its water proof but the exterioir of a car has to deal with more than just water.

Thats my worry flock wise.. don't want it to be curse word two weks later.. especially as its a daily. I'm assured it last fine externally (but they have never done a whole car, just badges etc.) Guess if its not been done there is no way of telling! Combination of a and c would be cool.. would also the reduce area needing to be sprayed.. possiby reducing my cost or making me confident enough to do some myself although I think the 'roughness' of the collage would show against the smooth paintwork as a lip or step and that might spoil it? I have a possible fourth option.. vinyl wrap.. a pro job is way too expensive. However have found a couple of places you can order HUGE rolls from (big enough to do biggest panel without joins think its 1600mmx50m.) for a couple of hundred quid, could always attempt a home wrap.. although guess thats asking for trouble!

I'm going to agree with shiny red and collaging.. I'd be afraid of the flock ending up like a pair of suede shoes trodden through a muddy field. Don't forget that I still have your tools

I'm gonna put another vote in for a & c combination. Theres a goof in Spalding with a bonnet wrapped in WWII propaganda posters, with a fantastic finish.. I can track the girl who owns it down and ask how she did it if ya like.

Ben hadn't forgotton have had a mad week! Cheers mate It's got to be elements of all the different Japanese scenes in my mind.. things with big bolt on arch extensions, Boso stuff, weird little kei cars (I don't know anything about any of it, but plenty of people are bound to be able to point you in the right direction for this sort of stuff).. Panels that sum up japanese car culture would be all kinds of win

It might depend on what you want to do with it in the future, if you think you may ever need to sell it on then 'a' might be the only real option.

I see another project for Area 52 coming along. Spare boot lid, spare bonnet and the magazines of choice. After a bit of love and affection from the boys down there we'll have something that you can sling on and see what it looks like.
I definitely think red elsewhere to offset the madness of the collage, but I reckon side collage might be a little too much. Other options are including collaged doors with the bonnet and boot but I think it'll work better in larger, flatter, but importantly less, areas.
Boot and bonnet? FTW. Someway of doing everything in red except a collaged roof? Massive FTW
Just my twopenneth.

The bodywork is in VERY good nick, and depending on how much you want to spend, you could have replacement doors, wings, bootlid, bumpers etc, everything apart from the rear quarters. Would make the respray costs a lot less, and you'd have a minty red MX5 again. It also has a mint roof and mint interior. I have a van that I can load all of the bits into and get them to you for diesel costs. PM me if you want more details.
