I have a small budget (that swmbo doesn't know about) that would stretch to a "Practical Classics" condition 3 vehicle - ie shabby, in need of work but would scrape through a MOT. initial thoughts are a MG Magnette ZA/ZB, moggie traveller, MG B GT needs to carry wife, baby and hound in comfort, ideally to do to Goodwood Revival types days. I'm limited on size so cars like rover P5 etc are too big. mg magnette is 4.3m long and will just fit in garage pics:-

I duno if there are any Simcas left in the UK at all! My choice: Standard Vanguard. They use a triumph engine. Early one same as the TR2 and up, the later Vanguard 6 is the same engine as all the straight six triumphs. You know where this is heading, right?

You just missed a tidy solid looking one with T&T but the rarer and less good 1.7 engine go for £1150 or so on eBay. Not high value cars at all. The 6s seem to be the most sought after.

MG Magnette ZA/ZB is definitely on my want-list, as is a Jowett Javelin. Was good to see them (almost) side by side in the Haynes museum at RRG10 and learn that the same designer was involved.
The MG is probably a better choice if you want it work occasionally ;-)

you'll need to enlighten me on where this is heading..... staid, solid old British saloon has same engine as sparky British sports car. Sparky British sports car has huge aftermarket tuning support. Staid, solid old British saloon gets entirely period correct engine overhaul and twice the BHP of stock. A 170 BHP TR6 engine would drop right into a Standard Vanguard 6. A regular Vanguard 4 could get the carbs, head, cam, etc. stuff from the TR2 tuning places. Period rally rep with blue dot spot lights and a Monte Carlo plaque on the front bumper? Its too cool for school.

You won't get a wife, baby and hound in a BGT! I've got to suggest a Farina really in either saloon or estate form. Scruffy ones are still available cheap enough if you beat a banger racer to them. Might be just too long though. "Pre Farina" cars are a bit smaller I think. For a smaller estate there's also the Herald. Or a Standard Companion if you can find one.

loads of room - they all fit in a mini I've sat in the back of a Mini. I do not fit in the back of a BGT! Fortunately there is no photographic evidence of the position I recently got myself in to while trying!

So Seth, you're sayin' he needs to ditch one: the wife, baby, or hound for the BGT?
Let's ponder that a bit, shall we?............. ;D

What about a Z car estate, like mine in my avatar? Not sure how long they are though, and they are a bit rare, but loads of space and super cool (imo)
