While mooching around some land speed record sites I found some links to tether car racing which I'd heard of before but thought it had died out decades ago. These are stuningly engineered model cars that whizz round a circular track tethered to a central pole. Pretty nippy too! There are a range of classes for engine sizes from 1.5cc to 10cc. The world record for the 10cc class is 344kmh They seem to come in two different flavours: Full on, high tech, minature land speed record cars like these.... and vintage style for the traditionalist, like so... And my personal favourites....

There used to be a club running at my school (when I was at school) that flew planes simmilarly tethered to a post.

When I was a kid there used to be a tether racing track I could see from the train when I travelled into the city. I wonder if it's still there? Probably not!
