Slightly un-PC, this article came from the Jan '85 issue of US magazine Car & Driver. Just bought 50+ old copies, and this one happened to be on top.
This is their list, discuss and debate:
El Nasr Polonez - Egyptian-built version of the wonderful FSO.
Trabant 601.
Skoda Rapid.
Otosan Anadol 16 - fibreglass bodied saloon with Ford engine from Turkey.
Hindustan Contessa - Indian-built Vauxhall Victor FE.
Hong Qi CA-770B - big Chinese limo.
Premier Padmini Deluxe - Indian Fiat 1100.
Daewoo Maepsy-na - A version of the GM Chevette/Kadett/Gemini T-car family, didn't know about this one.
Chevrolet Chevette - Amusingly, they included a US-built car, they didn't rate it much...
ZIL 114 Limousine - I know someone on here who probably can tell us lots about this :-)
Sorry, no pic's at the moment - at work and they're only small B&W ones in the article. A quick bit of Googlage will turn something up anyway. It was just the content of the list that amused me.

funny your should mention the Daewoo...I stumbled across this last week. Not so much the car or design, but maybe the execution? Especially using postage stamps as sales material.... and I bet this was a dog too!

Hindustan Contessa - Indian-built Vauxhall Victor FE.This I am very curious about. I take it that it's the same firm that make the Morris Oxford (Hindustan Ambasidor)

I'd go for the Tatra T603-2 or Volga M21 myself, but you probably knew that! ;D ;D Of course it depends what your definition of a "backward" country is, which probably depends on what country you come from, the old USSR certainly was poor but probably they would've considered our capitalist way of life a bit of an archaic and out of date way of life, so if you'd asked the same question in the USSR when it was still around they'd probably have been complimenting a load of our Western cars along the lines of "well, they're evil, exploiting capitalist dogs but those Hillman Imps they make aren't bad are they?" ;D ;D ;D (I am of course having a laugh, don't take me for some sort of Soviet-apologiser just because I'm a commie and I like some Soviet cars, I like some Western cars too mind! ;D)

As with much of what is written in Car & Driver, I think there's a sense of humour and a fair bit of self-deprecation (I really like the fact they've included a US-built car). Given that I've just bought a stack of them, I might extract a few old ad's and project cars in a separate thread.
That Daewoo really was a new one on me. Also discovered that the GM T-car was sold in US as an Isuzu I-Mark (I knew it as Gemini) and that another version they got sold as a Buick or Opel wasn't the Opel at all, but a rebadged Isuzu.
As the Kadett/Chevette T-car is very popular in these parts, perhaps someone would care to start a thread devoted just to it, and we can post all the bizarre versions there are of this car?
