Is the price of scrap metal rising?
The reason I'm asking is that we've had four traveller metal reclamation 'specialists' on the street in the past two days with their battered Transit pickups.
I stopped one taking a load of metal poles in my neighbours garden which he'd bought for a building project he's got.

Had some thieving git nick some random stuff off me front yard, including a knackered water pump off the granny (lucky I didn't need it for identification purposes, already had a new one). And I was IN! Bolt stuff up tight people, scrap must be on the up.

We get them round all the time. It's "Black Economy" in that not properly insured, no waste collection, transfer or disposal licences, not declaring to HMRC and probably on dole at same time. I put scrap at the top of the garden behind a fence ready for someone I know (fully licneced etc) to collect when I ring them but the other day it dissapeared. Seems some scrote decided to help themsleves. Not really a problem in this case as I simply wanted it gone idc and it they had asked then I'd have let them have it with pleasure but taking even scrap without asking it theft - pure and simply. I've even had them asking if my Land Rover restoration on a brand new galv chassis, Morris Minor and A35 are scrap as they will take them away for free Paul H

Scrap prices must be up, weve got a couple of tranny pickups doing the rounds round our way and its only a small village. I had a couple of sets of wheels in the back garden that I'm gonna sell when I get round to it. Didnt think there'd be an issue leaving them there, that is until some traveller lets himself into our back garden via a gate that backs onto a neighbouring road and knocks on the door asking if he can have them! (At least he knocked though.. ) Needless to say I now have 3 sets of alloys getting in the way in the garage!

had a scrapman round this morning - eyeing up two radiators i had lying at the side of the house - knocked on the door and asked if they were scrap - i said yes - can i take them he says - no you can't. Can i have the scrap off the back of your truck?
errr, no - he says
right - don't come back here unless you bring something to trade.
he went away both puzzled and dejected, spent the next couple of minutes explaining things to his mate then they left
this afternoon i painted the top of the gate with grease, and moved the rads. i expect to find blood and possibly a few teeth in the morning, when he slips off the gate and lands on the v6 engine block i left there to break his fall.

Seen a few rag and bone men in my area. Some are even in new vans.
Until recently I hadn't seen any for years...
I don't think scrap is up that much, as demand for metal isn't all that high (low manufacturing outputs), but there's a lot more people trying to scrape together cash.

Theres been a few 'new' flying scrapmen round here over the last month or so. I really cant knock them, the jobs market is wibblepoo and one way of making money is though scrap metal. I had a knackered A series engine on my drive a few months back and when I came hom from work I found a note on it from a scrappie with a mobile number politley asking if they could take it 'if I didnt want it'. Of course many would just take it without asking which is completely out of order. In this case I wanted to keep the engine but I thought it was jolly decent of the chap not to help himself. Just cos someones got a knackered transit piled high with washing machines and bike frames it doesnt automatically make him a thieving traveller scumbag- more like budding Alan Sugars!
Think about it, 1 load a day over the bridge and thats 120 quid odd in the old sky rocket. Easy money- if you can find the scrap that is.
Did spot a tat-man rummaging though a skip on the inlaws neighbours drive yesterday though. Not sure if thats technicaly stealing. Does it make a difference if the skip is in the road or on private property?

Does it make a difference if the skip is in the road or on private property? yes, still theft - stuff in the skip technically belongs to the skip owner, but the skip hirer can still retreive stuff until the skip is picked up. i just checked outside - theres a nice sliding mark in my painted grease, and a few greasy foot prints - no teeth, unfortunately, but nothing stolen either ;D

I used to go out scrapping, its not easy money unless your theiving stuff, you can do a tank of gas on a bad day for one load, and you usually need two of you so that halves your profit before you even take out the fuel/bacon butty money.

Last year we had the cast iron manhole covers and grids from the roads taken in our village. Besides being dangerous having a big hole in the middle of the road and at kerb side it cost many thousand to replace them which comes from us - the council tax payers
