Picked this up from other Forums. There is an open petition to get the government to bring back the 25 year year road tax exemption. Not sure it will work but it must be worth a try. Follow this link petitions.number10.gov.uk/save-old-cars/You will then receive a confirmation email and your vote is only counted when you click the link supplied in the email. On one level I'd love this to work but consider this fact... the level of government borrowing is such that for every £1 they spend they only earn 75p from revenues. Last calculation I saw (earlier this week) put the borrowing deficit for fiscal stimulus at £33,800 per household. Before loan interest. So that's a good £50K extra tax per household they have to raise to pay that back over 2 years. And that's not including the other debt and interest they have to service.
They are looking at cutting back the working tax credit and removing funding from the working mothers incentive schemes (child care vouchers being cut)
So they would regard giving free road tax to "some old bangers" as a good thing for why?
In fact I would not regard it as a good thing myself at the moment.

Those petitions have been doing the rounds since they abolished it, its not gonna come back, far more likely that they'll restrict the use of vehicles on a free disc and make you pay normal tax on your classic if you want to use it everyday, no government is gonna give the green lobby more amunition against them by allowing "polluting" older cars cheaper access to the raod, they are trying to get rid of them not encourage them.

I'd agree with the above. I've signed numerous petitions on the above site, and all have been answered by some meaningless guff statement from some minister or another, and pursued no further. I'd say there's a better chance of my nan leaping out of her chair and doing the macarena than the rolling 25 years being reinstated.
I'm just resigned to the fact that old cars can be an expensive hobby, and there are some things that you just have to pay for.

<sigh/> I'd love it to be true, but I think they're more likely to give us each a free day trip to Mars.
The petitions site is not without its successes no matter what some people on here think of it - road pricing for one - but I fear this one is a lost cause.

the thing about road pricing is there were no actual proposals, not real ones. So I'm not sure its a success on that case. Plus half the people were saying it was a universal tracking system. Some govt. spokesman then just says "we don't plan to track everybody's movements and there is no proposal for road pricing" and evryoe thinks victory. Same as a petition against compulsory homosexuality or something equally daft.
I've not heard of one success against a genuine bit of legislation from this site, although the original "tax exempt" thing came about because of a paper based petition organised by Practical Classics and others.
If you want to change law you need to be in the official consultation. That's where it matters. In the formal consultation and in the lobby. This is why we need people like the ACE and FBHVC and why its a crime that AA and RAC are pretty much just insurance companies now.

........ or you could just refuse to drive a car that's post '73 vintage. Must admit to getting a buzz when I queue up in the PO and get given the disc for free...... or that time I saw a copper walk round to the disc ..... looked at it and then walked back around the front to the reg' plate then walked off!! Not many opportunities to shove it up Gordon Brown these days. One other thing you could do is relocate to continental europe....... they don't have car tax there just a registration fee and think us English are stupid for paying it!!! They are probably right too! Oh well...... vive la republic!!

Thing is if you buy an early car you normally pay alot more for it, and even then the later cars tend to have benefits of their own.
But as said with borrowing through the roof I think we're lucky to have the pre-73 thing tbh as rumours have it that they don't want that as it is.

If they re-instated the 25 (or 30) year rolling date the few quid they'll lose from us will be more than compensated for by the VAT and tax/rates revenues gained from the after-market/classic/retro car industry which would be used to restore and maintain these cars that may otherwise end up scrapped. Also, it would help to create new jobs and secure many others in the same industries, people in work spend money therefore more VAt etc for HMG.
Unfortunately the chances of this government or the the next one changing it are slim.

Rather than sign this petition, I have made a massive meat and potato pie in the shape of my knackers and fed it to the neighbours dog, as I felt that it would be equally as effective in getting the 25-year tax thing reinstated. Fingers crossed eh!

A couple of hundred quid to drive my car as much as I like on the road for an entire year isn't really that bad in my opinion. I'm always skint when it comes around, but to me it's like starting a petition to ban income tax or something - where do people think the money will come from to maintain the roads we drive on?
Also, I really dislike the online petition rubbish - in my opinion it's totally undermined actual effective engagement in politics. A letter to your MP (that's what he is there for - to represent your views in parliament) has been replaced by some lazy mouse clicking slacktivism.
In fact, I'm tempted to start an online petition to ban online petitions. But I suspect that paradox will make the universe implode.
Oh and LOL @ xbollox - I've missed your humour on RR ;D

Is no chance right now when they are giving taxpayers money away for folks to scrap them...... offering them free tax to keep them going would make a mockery of the scrappage deal. I read somewhere that it takes more energy to make a new car than the new car will use in an average car lifetime. All this wasted energy for an extra couple of miles a gallon! Recycling OLD cars by fixing them up has to be the way forward.

I've written the numbers 2 and 5 (in that order) on one of my cats in the hope that Gordon Brown might read it. I'm expecting my free tax disc any day now. ;D

id be happy to pay emissions based rates of tax for my cars. last time my 21 year old FIVE litre V8 had the probe up its jacksie the CO2 was a smidge over that of the 54 plate ONE litre chevrowoo matiz that was on before it. the tester was fairly impressed. i wasnt, as i have to pay two hundred and something quid a year to drive it, not £35.

The MOT is a different measure of CO2 than the tax is based on. If based on the same basis as the RFL tax system you'd be in the £450 a year tax bracket.
For the MOT its a fairly crude measure of how much CO2 as a proportion of the gas coming out of your car there is.
For emissions taxation its how much CO2 your car emits in a mile of driving. Or kilometer probably.

yeah but anything over 1549cc costs 200 quid. Imagine your car under the new tax banding!

Havent the Tories said they will introduce some sort of rolling concession for old cars? Good chance they will 'forget' it when/if they do come to power though.
Be great for anyone with a collection of old motors, seeing as you cant drive them all at once
