whats the best paint stripper to use to take paint off ally wheels without damaging the metal? the wheels will be polished so i don't really want to use abrasives and i know some strippers react. any thoughts? cheers

Nitromors seems to be popular but in my experience of stripping a rocker cover with it it's messy and hardwork. Ended up bead blasting it in the end.

Depeds upon what you ask for, I had a rocker cover done then Chromed and its perfect they will usually ask you what you are going to do with it afterwards, just state you want to mirror polish them

Nitromors works, but as mentioned, its a complete pain in the behind. Appart from being quite a potent irritant its not particularly good to inhale either!
Ive found it only really works on alloys in warm temps, and needs multiple applications - with scrapping off with a piece of plastic (old credit cards work well) in between. Its important not to scratch the alloy as that just makes the polishing harder.
We've also tried acetone to strip paint, bought 25 litres from a chemical supplier (not massively expensive - think it was about 35 quid), which was ok (still to finish the wheels we started months ago!)
Who is doing the polishing? The company that I use will do all this for you for a few extra quid

v8 engine block size Its got stuff in it called 'carbostrip' its like a thick black acid stuff that is suppose to strip carbon off cylinderheads and exhausts but it also does a very good job of stripping paint and general crud.

Trichlorethelyne is pretty good My Polisher uses a hot trike tank to strip alloys before polishing them Not sure if thats legal anymore but it sure is effective ;D

Brass wire brush works nicely. Brass isn't as agressive as steel wire brushes, so it shouldn't dig in to the ally. I use one a lot to take rust off without wrecking what's left of the chrome on stuff, works great. Just don't press too hard or it will tarnish the metal
