new..mk1 escort ? penned by a university student here in england www.carbodydesign.com/archive/2007/05/21-benchmark-ford-escort-concept/coming up with a truly original design is extremely hard. Everyone knows what a car is expected to look like.. 4 wheels,a bit of glass to look through, some doors etc. So creating something new, within the expected conventions; that doesn't remind us of something already built. Is very demanding. These retro re-interpretations of iconic cars are basically a brands way of guaranteeing they create something unique to them; That obviously is a copy of something they already made. For example if Volkswagen remade the Citroen 2CV it wouldn't be acceptable. But, if Citroen remade the 2CV or DS it would be acceptable because its their design and only they have the rights to reproduce it. That MK1 escort design is lovely. Wish Ford would have the balls to build it. Thing is you know it would end 'focus' grouped and be all rounded, massive, heavy and fwd

What about if a German manufacturer re-made a British classic? well that would be wrong obviously, And before you suggest the germans are re-making the mini, i'd strongly disagree! Its a somewhat more worldwide affair. the car was penned by a yank, which is why the original concept behind the original mini was completely ignored! parts for the car come from all over the world and are assembled in the uk by a variety of foreigners (cos lets face it the uk is just a big mixture of foreign people!) what if the brits built beetles, oh hang on they already did that with the original one!

That gets a yes vote from me. If they build it so it is as truly small as it should be then its winner. Of course I also think it should really have rear leaf spring shackles hanging out the back of the car too... x 2 You just know any "revival" car these days will look like a Hummer compared to the original.... And with Honda's N360/600, Mini & Fiat 500 all other cars always did by comparison... which was/is a Major part of their charm that is lost. Then there's Honda CRZ "CR-X" I'll stick with the original thanks. (& if the CR-Z is supposed to be light-weight, economical & half electric why does it need to be so huge with such a big ugly grille? I mean the original isn't THAT old/small !)

Also, I know we don't normally do bikes on this forum, but I have to say, if it's retro Honda's we're talking, then surely the brand new only-just-released Honda CB1100 has to be up there! Straight out of the pages of Honda history and looking fresh as a daisy. If only the retro cars could be such exact reproductions!
