Ive decided its time to part with my Integra Type-R and get something a little more sensible, practical and cheaper to run!
So of course I'm looking at old stuff lol
I'm terrible at looking for cars, I have it wired into me that I should be looking at old VW's lol
So suggestions!
Budget up to or around 1k-1500 not too bothered about insurance cost etc as its bound to be cheaper than the Teg!
Wouldnt mind an estate or even a van

BMW E34? Say a really nice top spec 520i, or 525i - post 91, so one with a timing chain, no belt, and the better M50 engine. Really nice small-car feeling 5 speed manual box, great autos, lively 150/192BHP engine, good economy, all the toys, easy to live with.... You could find one with air con, on board computer, cruise, ABS, PAS, total closure, electric seats, leather, front and rear fogs, one touch windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors (or a combination of any of those depending on what you want.....). A healthy 520i will return about 32 on average, a 525i - well, I've got a 5 speed manual in mine and I average, brim to empty, 30.2mpg at the moment, over several full tanks. That's a mix of about 60/40 around town/motorway work. Barring replacement consumables with age and use, like discs, pads, shocks, tires and bushes - the only thing it should need is plugs, filters, oil and coolant. I've done 5000 in mine and had to do nothing to it so far....MOT on Wednesday though Autos are better if you're cruising mostly on the motorway as the gearing is lower in top, so potential economy is higher if that's what you're doing. ![](http://www.zeckhausen.com/images/Cars/BMW/E34/E34_M5.jpg) Add some throwing stars, clear indicators (if desired) and you could have one clean looking machine........Plenty of bits out there to tweak and modify them, excellent support and parts are actually very reasonable - not bad to work on, either. A good one will set you back about 800-1500 so well within budget! Go for one that's been cosseted and preferably with full service history (proven, not just a bunch of old receipt)...and it'll stand you in very good stead. Get one that's been thrashed and abused and you'll rack up some big bills very quickly... Always nice to find one that's had evidence of a water pump/hose/thermostat/coolant change as well at some point in it's life, as these can be a weakpoint. Only 6 specific issues to look for too when buying - make sure there's no oil/coolant contamination, no major rust, that it doesn't shimmy under braking, that there's no odd noises from the suspension, that the steering is precise with no play, and that the windscreen wipers work well with no odd clunks. The rest is just the general type of car things to check for ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Huge boot, too....

I'm just off for a second look at an E30 318is - it was quite fun on a test drive yesterday but I'm trying to decide how easy it will be to live with (fells like the kind of car that will take a lot of concentration to keep on the road pointing in the right direction in the wet, not that that won;t be fun ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) )

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

how much are you asking for the itr then? out of interest do you really find it that expensive? as I'm running a uk itr as well, i don't really find it any more expensive than any other car tbh (vtec fuel consumption aside)

mid 90s Audi A6? Massively practical, comfortable and reliable. My Dad has the 1.8 Estate - slow, but gets there. Returns good mpg. Look for the 1.9TD. They should clean up quite nicely, too, if that's your thing. Bit boring, though - especially after a 'teg. ![](http://www.cruisewolf.no/fin96AudiA6Avant18.jpg)

LS400? I can't remember your criteria any more but everyone else is recomending big cars. Even a GS300. Neither are retro but IMO none of the cars suggested yet are either so meh.

I got myself an Audi A6 avant for £800 a couple of months ago. Nice big barge but finding the 2.6 V6 auto to be pretty thirsty. Averaging 24mpg in town on a good day and 31mpg on the motorway. Still a great car and nothing wrong with it but bear in mind the fuel costs if thats a concern. This is mine; ![](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3313/3641508823_fdb3c75575.jpg) Dave.
