Got some wheels for the Volvo ;D was going to get the Hockenheims, but these came up cheap and I couldn't resist! I got a set of 4 6jx14" Speed Star RS Eights (whatever that means). They had sat in a mates garden after his brother lost interest with reburbing them after he realised 90% of the bolts were siezed. After a good soak in WD40 I've managed to removed all the bolts from two of the wheels GREAT! However the centre doesn't seem to want to come away from the rim Any smart ideas? is the centre heat shrunk on I don't know please help. So far I've spanked them with various rubber mallets and sprayed WD40 between where the rim meets the centre (see pic below) The plan is to dismanlte them polish the rim and paint the centre some horrid colour

are you SURE they are split rims...?? ive had a few wheels that look like it but are not... best to make 100% sure before the sledge hammer comes out....
wash them and pop one in the oven for 10 mins or so see if that frees them up.. si

I've just read that the BMW/BBS 2pc wheels are heated up to get the centres in so, the oven is set to 200 degree C and I'm going to get a wheel in there before the missus get back

I'd have thought they would need cooking for 30 mins to an hour to heat them up fully.
Even then, they may not release untill they cool down again.

I just had this problem with my BBS. I sprayed a decent coat of hairspray down the gap in the rear of the wheel and set light to it, then flipped the wheel over and knocked the centre out with a big nylon hammer and a piece of 4x2. You have to hit really hard though. I was shitting myself thinking they'd crack but they've all come apart fine.

They may even have sealer between them. Would be odd, as that seam has no need to be air tight. You never know what someone has done in the past though.
Cook the hell out of them, wont do any harm.
Then whack them, hard. i guess it would take alot to crack them.

I was frankly shocked at how hard I had to smack the back of my Compomotives to get them apart... I found repeatedly hitting and furiously swearing at just the one point on the back of the wheel was the way to go. Scoring around the join with a mega sharp scalpel also helped.
Persevere - them there wheels are going to look lovely when they're done!

Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

Heating probably wont give you the required results, as both parts of the rim heat up evenly especially as they are a similar material and a similar COE, might have better luck if you dropped the bigger side of the rim in scalding water, but not deep enough to make contact with the inner part of the rim, leave for 10mins, remove from the water and pour iced water over the centre, might work!!

Get a blow torch out! Mount the rim face down on some wood to protect the rim lip. Place a block of wood on the back face of the centre and then heat the band up running the flame around the outside the the band, when it's really hot, get another bit of wood and rest it on the wood that's sitting on the wheel centre and then smack I hard with a rubber mallet. Some good strong strikes and the wheel centre will drop out!

how much did you pay for them? you do realise in good condition they fetch £250+! ive got a set and also had great difficulty splitting them. i tried gently heating with a heat gun and lots of wd40, but in the end the only way top split them was with a big hammer! i put an old towel on the back of the face and used the butt of the hammer (wooden handled) and smacked hard working around the edge of the rim to ease the centre out ( sounds really rude the way ive written that!) just you wait till you want to put the back together, its even more fun!
