Mk2.5 (NB) MX5 owner here. My advice is plain and simple. Get. an. M. X. 5. Mk1s are more hardcore and IMO look better, but Mk2s and Mk2.5s have nicer insides and more comfort. Mine is a blast when you've got empty road ahead and if you like the sound of a Vtec, then drill the airbox on the 5. I don't think there's a better introduction to RWD than the 5 and they are absurdly cheap to own and run. you can advance the timing on Mk1 1.6s for a cheap power mod but IIRC some of the Mk1 1.6s had a weak spot on the timing gear somewhere - I can't remember the specifics now, but I read something on the OC about later 1.6s being better designed. Also worth noting: MX5 = non interference engine. If you're local, I'll take you for a spin. Literally as I need new tyres

I really want to buy an MX5, but I'm not too sure on insurance at the moment. Currently I have a Imp (Group 1) on a classic policy so thats cheapsish, but the Imp is for sale and my other car is a Rover 216 (Group 7) which runs out of insurance in December and will mean I'm 21 with 3 years NCB. Do you know if I can get a MX5 on a classic car policy? The quotes I've had so far have all been £900+ which seams pricey, considering both my cars around £500 at the moment.

Some policys should do an mx5 or an early one at least but most probably wont yet, depends if they pick and choose whats a classic or go by age.. and what age they class as classic.. Mines insured through halifax and is £200 fully comp (I'm 29 now though and have 6 years no claims ;D )

Forgot to say in my earlier post, on the subject of boot space on mx5, was talking to a guy at the metrocentre meet a few months ago, who had 2 small outward pointing dings in the bootlid.
Turns out you can't shut the boot if there are 2 litre pop bottles stood upright in there!

The boots aren't as small as everyone makes out - I've had mine full to the top and can easily get shopping for a week for 2 people in there. The only time it's come up short is when I went to B&Q to buy a wardrobe and had to hang the flat pack out the roof on the way home. That was fun
Insurance wise, I pay just over £400 and have magic points too! (I'm 24) so shop around, it will come down.

Yeah, mine's about £250 to insure, and that's with the missus included and parked on the street in London!
The boot can be comparatively capacious (sort of) if you pack it well, but the spare wheel and battery really get in the way...

I think she may mate. i never ever liked them ill be honest until i saw a few picture and then the idea really grew on me. problem is I'm 6ft 5 so i don't even think id fit in it!! (passenger side that is let alone drivers side!) But they are full of win with some subtle mods/colour coding/slam and wheels. insurance is better than i expected too i don't think those quotes sound at all bad!

I'm nearly 6'3" I didn't really have any problems. I don't know how I'd be on a long journey, but I used to do nearly 2000miles/month in a Mini

The Del Sol is gay and has nothing to make up for it, it's ugly, it's FWD and it's got nothing for boot space. The MX5 is gay but makes up for it with perfect handling and shifting and a motor that loves to have it's whipped ... it maybe has 125hp (later models with VICS/VVT have ~150hp), but I swear I'll get a speeding ticket in it soon ... The top on my (POS) 1995 MX5/Miata goes up and down in seconds and is completely waterproof, but I have to have it down when I'm wearing a helmet and in my 'race car driver' position ... I'm 6'. It has a perfectly serviceable boot and gets 30+ miles per US gallon. Most parts for it are cheap and it can be hopped up cheaply and working on it is simple. -Steve
