I used S3 (injection cars - not carb, so not off a 3.4) fuel tanks. They have a bigger outlet to the Lucas 4FP fuel pump, and also have a return line built in.
They are a direct fit in replacement of the earlier tanks, and have all the same mountings - though the fuel tank sender can be in a different place and might need the wiring extending.

So... here endeth the thread, or at least my part in it.
Head has finally had to over-rule heart.
I've had to accept that changing circumstances in my life have stopped me working on Ropey, to the extent that he's suffering badly. I don't have the skill or time to fix the bodywork issues, and I don't currently have funding to put him away or send him to a specialist.
The old boy isn't out for the count though, he's going on to someone that CAN do the work needed.
Thanks to all for following my thread, and I'm pleased its inspired some people to follow this lesser trodden path and create some awesome Jaguars.
I'll be back with another one at some point in the future.
Regards,
Rich

Hi everyone..I'm Phil, Rich's brother. Like Ric has mentioned, i was with him when we went to rescue Ropey, and originally convinced him to go view the car over an old Mini! I've always loved the car, and we've had some interesting times over the last few years, making exhausts, swapping engines and generally keeping Ropey going. So it's fair to say we both have history with the car, Rich obviously more than me at the moment. I always made him promise to give me first refusal should Ropey be up for sale, and that's pretty much where we're up to right now. I'll hopefully be getting him down to my garage over the weekend, then the drying out/evaluation of how bad it is can start. I'm not kidding myself, i know it needs LOADS of work but it's do-able with time, so why not! Plans? Yep, i have some...none that i can really go into...yet! Here's a picture of me driving Ropey (looking worried) on the wrong (right?) side of the road in France, following a GT40 and a cobra in Le mans. If no-one minds I'll keep this thread going, it's nice to see where Ropeys come from, and Rich's hard work in saving him from the track makes him what he is!

I'm still just as interested to see what happens next too bad Rich had to let the car go, but it's nice to see it didn't go too far!

Fate plays funny games... a rather nasty injury sustained by my brother this weekend means he can't take on Ropey - so he's got a reprieve and stays with me. No updates for a short while as I've got to get my head around it and a few other things before I start putting the effort in, but with summer approaching there should be progress of some sort.

Hello all. What great thread. Rich, I hope your plans for Ropey are coming together and your brothers injury is not to serious. Well I am in the process of putting all the pieces together to save an XJC. It had a Chevy V8 installed years ago and I am going to reunite the kitty with a Jaguar 6. I have an AJ16S to instal and am on the look out for a 290 to mate it with. I will post pics once I get her out of the storage unit and into the "operating shop" to begin the transplant. I'm sure I will need to read the tread again and hope you guys can continue the good work with your projects!

Hi,
Things are coming together, and I'm regrouping before my next efforts. Phil's injury was a badly broken wrist which has caused him to be unable to carry out mechanical work (or much other manual work.) He is recovering, and somehow is still messing about with cars though at a much slower pace!
I will try again with the AJ16S once I have the AJ6 working - the plan is to get it running, fit megasquirt in parallel, then ionce all the hiccups are done with, stick the supercharged engine in. Megasquirt files were kindly provided by janm who did the same conversion on his car.
I look forward to seeing your XJC - make sure you get a thread up on here about the project. With regards to gearboxes, you can use the Getrag 265 if you can't find the 290.

House move coming up at the beginning of June to a place with a very long driveway and a garage, so I'll be able to get cracked on with Ropey.
Is it just me that assesses the suitability of a place to live by how many cars 'fit' in the space it has?

Is it just me that assesses the suitability of a place to live by how many cars 'fit' in the space it has? Good lick with the move - organize parts at the front end so they aren't lost by the time you get there, don't ask me how I know. In terms of assessment of abodes, SWMBO regularly reminds me that we bought a garage with a house attached.

House move completed, old car installed in driveway pending shoving into the garage...!
The fun bit has been going through things trying to pick up where I left off. Good news is that even after being stood for so long the engine still turns, there's still ignition and all appears well.
So far to get things back on track, I've discovered a knackered fuel pump and injectors that are a bit suspect. Last I was working on Ropey, I could get him running on a sniff of easystart, but he wouldn't sustain running, or start unaided. I thought it was an injector drive issue but it seems I was wrong! They're responding; but at a guess the filters in them are blocked as there's not a lot get through them. The old fuel pump is off, and I've stripped off the injector rail and injectors. A little bit of overhaul work on the fuel system and I should be rewarded by a healthy amount of noise from the 3.6 up front.
There's a few bodywork bits that need more than cosmetic attention, but until I've had a good crawl around underneath the car I've found nothing I didn't already have on the list.
Enough to keep me busy for a while!

Body rot to the point its pretty terminal. Its got into the chassis legs, toeboards, A posts and front bulkhead. Conclusion - I left the car outside unprotected too long, and its cost me. I'm not happy about it, but I can't take gutting him like a fish when I can get a replacement for him for way cheaper.
