on a related note, i found out a bit more about the new MoT regs today when the mother-in-law-to-be's car went for a test.... it's £48 for a test, the garage she takes it to doesn't do the test themselves but have an agreement with one down the road to pass tests to them. If it did fail, they are unable to offer a free retest due to the time involved but the standard retest fee is £40. They get this for trade at £20 which they'd pass on to the customer. So it's not too bad, but it's definately worse than it was. The reason for the cost is the computer system. This basically tells the operator what to test depending on the type, age and equipment fitted to the car which is specified at the start of the test. it tells the operator everything including when to put the car on the ramp, the order to do the checks, and what the fail conditions are. Because this cannot be skipped (a certificate cannot be issued without all the checks being done in sequence) you're looking at at least 30 minutes labour to run through, hence no free retests. for the record, the guy at the garage was just as p'ssed off about it as me they did say though that if they have time they normally stick any MoT jobs up on their own ramps before they take it down to the test centre and check as much as they can - rust, bearings, loose this and missing that as well as the easy stuff like lights and the horn. so good luck guys!

I recon I should get a discount on my MOTs, as I always act as 'assistant', sitting in the car operating the brakes, shaking the steering ect....
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

I've just mot'd a few motors recently and I found a station that only invested in some computer equipment quite recently, but not the all singing and dancing newer stuff... they have three years to go across to the new system, hence they can still give free retests. And did when mine failed! Yeehah, just a thought... ;D
