So, one 1987 Vauxhall Belmont 1.8 GLSi with a genuine 58,000 miles, saved from the banger boys via a drunken eBay bid - £51 Welding of plate to end of each sill - £100 (I so need to learn how to weld) New tailpipe and back box - £22 MOT - £32 80's Mk2 Ashtray Brown Love and tremendous torque steer from 115bhp and under a ton in weight - priceless... Here's a really poo pic from the Bay. A proper pic, together with an insert in Readers Rides, to follow: Handles much better now I found out that the tyres were at 15psi. And I drove this back from Brighton. Fast. I'm off for a lie down.

TURDMOBILE!
Rockin' a fat one there Mr Welfare. Belmont's are, lets face it, astoundingly ugly..... and therefore perversely cool. And a 115-brake one in poo brown is surely the pinnacle!
I'm quite a fan of these old beasts (had 2x wagons myself). They are utterly indestructable (rust excluded ;D).
Cool.

Wait till I get a picture of the interior up - would you believe a chocolate dashboard and brown-check velour? Mmm...what a colour combo. Can't believe Vauxhall would even offer such an evil combination. Woulda loved to have been a fleet manager in the 80's - 'yeah, you didn't make your bonus this year so we changed your new Belmont's colour combination...'
Astoundingly ugly styling, astoundingly huge boot, astoundingly frightening torque steer on greasy roundabouts - but then I've never driven a Maestro Turbo. Put it down to the cheapo tyres. But dig the 13" original Ronal alloys! They've even got 'VAUXHALL' written between two of the spokes so you don't forget you're driving The Griffin's finest!

It's a long story! Basically - bought Rekord No 1, pleased as punch as it was mint. Finished very minor jobs, took to shows, got bored. Sold.
Bought Rekord No 2. Not bad by any means but nowhere near as nice as Rekord No 1. Ended up needing a lot more doing to it than first thought - brakes were shot, as was the clutch - but taught me a lot about mechanics. So sold that at the start of last month.
Promised Mrs W no more retro cars until after Xmas, tidied up garage with lots of racking, did lots of DIY, spent lots of time with Mrs W, got bored. Got drunk, found Belmont on eBay, set up an auction snipe, forgot about it until e-mail received saying car won. And here we are...

You got bored with the Rekord so you bought a Belmont Whenever I get bored with my cars I just make them faster ;D I suppose your way is easier (and cheaper), but I never do take the easy option I think it really does need a style injection though. Hmm, slammed, 8x13" banded Rostyles, white walls, roof rack, etc, etc. I'm coming 'round to the idea.

the turd-mobile has landed! YES YES YES! If ever there was a true spiritual successor to the original TURDMOBILE* this is DEFFO it. The original TURDMOBILE was a 1982 Toyota Carina I owned about 4 years ago.... bought for £0, it had cress growing in the footwells & generally hinking bodywork, all topped off in dog's doo brown.... yet it was such an ace car.....

Well done Richard on saving this icon of mid-80's motoring! £200 all-in sounds pretty good, better than what my £25 Laurel ended up costing.
I hope you'll show those pesky Dedras in the village a hard time and go hunting for other hatch-based saloon ugliness. Fiat Tempra anybody?
