This will probably end up in the whinge bin! 2 days ago a Mk1 Ford Capri XLR was towed into a scrapyard in Fife, I went to enquire if I could get bits off it but was turned down. A few weeks previously the same yard towed in a Mk1 Ford Cortina which they described as being mint, under the scrappage scheme, this ended up in the crusher! The owners got up to £2300 under the scrappage scheme for their classics, if they had sold them privately they would've made at least £4000 each & would have survived! The Capri is due in the crusher at some point too, a decent usable car scrapped & even if broken up for spares, a lot of usable hard to get spares destroyed! Makes me sick! This isn't what the scrappage scheme should be for! Classics should've been sold on!

Its funny my local scrap yard is starting to get some interesting cars in now, and some in mint condition. Good part is they don't care if you get parts off them.
TBH mate, some of the classics scapped aint worth £2000, plus we cant save them all.

My view of the scrappage scene is gradualy getting worse and worse. At 2k any classic worth less that that has the threat of getting crushed, and the majority of the owners of clean low mileage cars don't know/care how much its worth, 2k is enough to them and it saves the hassle of advertising it for sale. Also, as time goes on the average condition of classics will probably go up (except for rat-look lol), making it harder for younger people to get into classics because the price will go up, and the quantity of cars will drop, as will the spares availability if they continue to get scrapped. Even if a £150 snotter get scrapped through this and crushed is a loss of spares. This happens anyway without the aid of the scrappage scheme, but the scrappage sceme makes so many factors sooo much worse.
Whinge bin? TOO BL00DY RIGHT!!!! WHINGE WHINGE BL00DY WHINGE!!!

The only good thing about the scrappage scheme is if they run out of money, it might end soon. Yes this will end up in the whinge bin, cos it's some normal classic/retro owners voicing their honest and common opinion of the government encouraging doing away with perfectly good cars. Why do we need to worry about saying that? Oh yeah, against 'policy'. OK I am off to autoshite.com now, to talk about what I want to talk about without fear of being censored.

That sounds like a rubbish yard. There is absolutely nothing that prevents them from breaking scrappage cars for parts apart from their own ignorance and laziness. Indeed, one benefit of this ridiculous scheme is that there are quite a lot of second-hand parts out there now, especially for Nineties bland-mobiles - which are by far the biggest victims of the scheme.

I think it was Hyundai that released a list of all the cars that they had taken in from the scrappage scheme.... so many Morris Minors

The americans had the right idea on this one, and the maximum age of the car is something like 20 years old to save classics.

Surely someone who owns a Morris Minor has bought it as a retro/classic car - a conscious decision to drive something old and different. Why would they then chop it in for something that's exactly the opposite of this? Fair enough one or two, but to hear its happening a lot, I just don't understand it.

I totally agree with your views regarding the scrapage scheme. I don't really understand why you come on Retro Rides if your opinion of it is so low! I don't mean that in a nasty way, I genuinely don't understand!

The American scheme exempted all vehicles made before 1985, and also had a MPG element to it as well, so for example, a 1991 Toyota Corolla, no matter how knackered, would have been eligible.
I saw several collections of 'clunkers' whilst in The USA, and nothing particularly interesting seemed to have been scrapped in large numbers, although fans of 1980s/1990s Ford/chevy pick up trucks might disagree.
This exemption was agreed by SEMA, a lobbying group consisting of aftermarket parts suppliers and others.
Over here, the bunch of upper class twits who are the FHBVCC didn't even notice this scrappage scheme before it arrived, and don't care on the grounds it dosen't affect 1950 Jaguar XK120s.

I think you are missing a very big point. Many of the retros/classics that have gone have been owned by the proverbial old ladies who have owned their cars for donkeys years. CC Weekly did an article, not too far back, which told the story of a lovely useable Vauxhall Magnum which, because said proverbial old lady could no longer drive comfortably ( No PAS for starters) she decided to chop it in. She is one of many, many elderly people who have done the same. The car is a tool to do the job, no sentiment, no tears, just hard cold facts. Even i have to concede that a 2009 Kia Picanto is going to be a better place to be in the depths of winter than a 1962 Morris Minor with wibblepoo heating.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the contact numbers of the relevant owners clubs where given out to the dealers in the US cash for clunkers scheme. If a car that was a potential classic came in they would give the owners club first refusal on the car for the $2000 or what ever it is before it was crushed. Sounds sensible.
This is the top list of US cars being scrapped
1. Ford Explorer 4WD 2. Ford F150 Pickup 2WD 3. Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD 4. Jeep Cherokee 4WD 5. Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan 2WD 6. Ford Explorer 2WD 7. Chevrolet Blazer 4WD 8. Ford F150 Pickup 4WD 9. Chevrolet C1500 Pickup 2WD 10. Ford Windstar FWD Van

So are we supposed to kill all proverbial old ladies in order to rescue old cars? WOOHOO!
..I had the theory that it might be down to people buying classics and never getting them finished or whatever, so when the option to trade it in for a fancy new car came along.. they went with it...

I don't doubt that some are "unfinished" projects, tho they still have to have an MOT to qualify. Best bet is to go out and by a few old Fiestas for a couple of hunderd quid each, make sure they have PAS mind, and advertise them in Saga Magazine or the like as free swaps with WHY? You might just get the old gentleman ringing you to swap his 7,000mls from new Humber Imperial for your 1996 Fiesta Quartz. Could work.

That actually isnt that bad an idea, but only the magazine/swap bit, as you don't want to be left holding loads of rusting (especially around the filler cap) fiestas ;D

I see Ken Gibson was bleating in the Stun about how the scheme should be carried on, to keep all those British car workers employed. Ahem, AFAIK, the greatest beneficiaries have been Kia and Hyundai, neither of which have f-all to do with the Britsh motor industry. Blokes a bell-end.
