Isn't it interesting how strong feelings a lot of car enthusiasts have when it comes to the humble VW Golf! I guess it's due to the size of the VW 'scene' which leads some people outside of this scene needing to be negative about what is generally a perfectly adequate hatchback, even if you aren't especially excited by them. I reckon that's about it on the nail. I don't like 'em because, after people raving about them, I owned a couple and thought they were dull as dishwater and certainly no better than any 'competitor' so didn't really understand the hype. We're all different, which can only be a good thing, but if people don't like a particular make or model it's no big deal and not as negative as starting a thread about how a certain marque or model is *** or whatever. It's just an opinion (in my eyes) something everyone is allowed without them going OTT of course. Three (at least) of the cars on the list are surely too modern for Retro-Rides anyhow so maybe the poll should just have been Mk1 and Mk2 and possibly Mk3? They are all different cars and will all have different build quality, especially from Mk3 on. Having had a Mk3 recently I wasn't convinced it could have ever been a 'best in class' type car in it's day, lacking in any character, excitement or style at all.

very much the MK1, although early mk2's are really starting to hit the spot. But given the chance i would always go for the booted version ;D

Mk1's all the way. I've owned five and one Mk2 8v. Nostalgic, fun, I'd love another... ;D

Love um all to be fair, but as the famlybanger mobile is a mk3 thats getting the vote Maybe not cool/scene enough for some, you could say its too fat n lardy after the iconic mk1 and not too sad mk2, but its weight gives it a solid big car feel of reassurance which me and the missus love with last dailys been mk2 granada and a transit. Plus decent ones are cheap which wins for me and our 1.9 derv pulls like a train i.e need to shovel the coals to get a head of steam but then sits at a ton once on song which gets us on hols quick smart. On hills do feel i should have got a turbo'd one but as said cheapness rules

Having had a Mk3 recently I wasn't convinced it could have ever been a 'best in class' type car in it's day, lacking in any character, excitement or style at all. Ironically that exactly why i would choose a MK3 understated, and unpopular, and to some extent not as 'scene' as the older more popular models.
