wheres the none option? I actually loath the things and appart from a fashion statement, I cant see why anyone would wanna drive one as a special car.... its just a friggin car.. I find nothing exciting about it. nothing makes me want to go out for adrive in it.. and every mk2 I drove handled realy badly on the same lanes that any other car (even my friggin nova) handled great on... Yes. Another friggin-ly valuable contribution, there. [/quote] I'm with you here soundhog, I've watched this place slowly go down hill over the past few years thanks to an overload of negativity

mk1 for looks and chuckability,
Mk2 for well builtness
but the New Mk6 GTI is a machine n half - but alas far too new - so i'll stick to my mk1's

The Mk1 is a design classic but the MKII is just such a good car.

Never had one or driven one, but think the Mk1 has the least cluttered lines. Mk 2's do look nice though, and I haven't seen a rat look one yet! Which can only be a good thing This one form the Gathering definitely floated my boat ;D

mk2 for me, just because of the conversions available! my flatmate has a mk2 vr6 and in fun terms its great! The handling is still great and straight line speed is pretty good too, the build quality is just that bit better than the mk1 as well; although i would never rule out an early mk1 gti!

I really, REALLY don't like Golfs. I've driven a few, been driven in a few, and it's a tossup between a mk1 gti cab and a mkv r32 as to which was the more tolerable.
I'm going to go with the one I bounced off the limiter. I liked the engine note, if little else...

Have to put a vote in for the mk3, very over looked Golf. Will go back up in value at some point! I voted Mk2 but having owned 2 Mk3's I have to agree on this point too. A great compromise for those after the fun of a Mk2 with a few little mod cons thrown in.

defo mk1's just an iconic car imo. mk2s are proberly better than mk1s however its just not a mk1, if you get what i mean. Really like mk6's too VW seem to have stepped their game back up with the latest ones.

I guess it depends how you intend to use them. Parents bought 2 '74 Golfs new but father couldn't stand the choppy ride & twitchy handling & starkness after his '66 Alfa Gulia super (actually same or shorter w/base). Wasn't impressed either when strut towers changed shape after bottoming out suspension travel & dealers solution was to hammer them back down again!.
Seem to remember reading contemporary UK magazine comment about resale values of mk2 RISING once buyers realized how much bigger/heavier mk3 was.

Isn't it interesting how strong feelings a lot of car enthusiasts have when it comes to the humble VW Golf! I guess it's due to the size of the VW 'scene' which leads some people outside of this scene needing to be negative about what is generally a perfectly adequate hatchback, even if you aren't especially excited by them.
Personally, I've driven all of them apart from the Mk6 and have owned a couple of Mk3's (an underpowered GTI 8v, followed by a much better VR6). To compare the early models to the modern ones is very difficult as they are completely different cars built in different era's for a very different marketplace.

Hmmm Actually an interesting thread inbetween the jibbajabba I'd love a MK1, i'm not a dubber, I just love the way they look, On one hand they are an obvious car, on the other they have been modded and whet my appitite, so I'd totally like one, even if they did refine the model for MK2 (good move VW), i just wouldn't pay any excess for one, and some I've seen are a bomb. So Mk2 appears to be best, but given the choice I'd want the Mk1, all the rest meh unless its a cheap daily

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
