This is my latest acquisition after selling my E28 a couple of weeks back. It's an '83 running shell with no engine and box that I picked up cheaply. The running gear is going to come from this:- ![](http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g134/stevecrx/Porsche%20944/P1000454.jpg) I've had this one for about two years but the rust is just a bit too terminal. On the plus side, it's only done a documented 95k so is perfect transplant fodder for the new shell which tatty but largely rust free and totally straight, with no sunroof:- ![](http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g134/stevecrx/Porsche%20944/P1000446.jpg) ![](http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g134/stevecrx/Porsche%20944/P1000449.jpg) ![](http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g134/stevecrx/Porsche%20944/P1000450.jpg) Plan is to tidy up the new shell, chuck some paint on it and go for something similar to the track toy that Wheeler Dealers made. I'll try and update this as I go.

Brilliant - I will keep a close eye on this thread. I'm bonkers for 944's and have a early turbo at the moment.
Should be a great car once finished and no sunroof !
Keep us up to date with progress please...

Make that two of us keeping an eye on the thread.
Great one! It should be a right hoot to drive being a Series 1 that the engine is going into. Being a Series one, you'll also have the cheaper bits (£15 for a lower arm comped to £180 for a lower arm). I know I am enjoying driving mine and opening up the taps.
Oh, fancy a potential wheel swap (we'll see how long I don't change my mind for...).

Cheers for the kind comments guys.
Started work on it by removing the stone guard stickers from the rear arches - a complete ballache, especially as its had a respray at some point and they were painted over. Also stripped the carpets and the floor looks good.
Only issues I can see are a 50x20mm rust hole on the L/H sill, the obvious dent on the back and a damaged seat mount. The sill can easily be welded, and the rear panel can either be reshaped and filled or replaced with the one from the red car which is still good. As for the seat mount, I'm looking at a pair of buckets - so much lighter than the originals - so will probably make up custom mounts. I'm looking for a cheap gasless mig welder to start the repairs so if anyone has any recommendations I'd appreciate it?
ChasR, what kind of wheel swap are you looking for? I'll be keeping the design 90's and painting them but I'm going to sell the fondmetal cross spokes that came with the black one.

I've already sold them. It was one of my first weight saving measures what with them being 25kg each!

I'll be keeping the design 90's and painting them but I'm going to sell the fondmetal cross spokes that came with the black one. Regarding Gasless welders, I wouldn't recommend them for sills or mounts. IME and a mate's they still don't lack the splatter factor quite like CO2 or better still Argon. Also the welds seem to be more for 'sticking' rather than making two things into one. Regarding the wheels it was the D90s that I was after. You are aware that you cannot just fit them straight onto a pre-85 car. The offset between the 944.1 and .2 is very different (around 40mm difference) meaning that there is a good chance that the wheel will catch inside the arch not to mention that it will look very odd (wheel deep inside the arch). This is because the early cars didn't have ABS. This will also be why there are more than 1 type of Teledials out there. Hubcentric spacers will sort the offset issue out mind you relatively easily. Sorry if I have come across as harsh in my post but it's always nice to be aware of problem areas.

As for the offset issue, I was aware of it but not to the extent of 40mm! I'm guessing (and correct me if I'm wrong) that I can fix the problem by swaping over the suspension arms, etc from the later model (after refurbing them).

AFAIK the early cars used an offset of around 15. The later cars used an offset of 55+ on the fronts (going to 62 if you had a car with Club Sports on (I.E the (951) 944 Turbo Silver Rose with M030 Suspension).
You can change the suspension bits but it's a very pricey way of doing things. Refurbed lower arms from Hartech are around £180 each (around the cheapest people) (if the balljoints are gone in later arms, the whole hog has to be replaced, something to bear in mind if the suspension on your later car ain't too hot). I reckon you'd probably transfer most of the suspension over from your later car onto your earlier car to do it. Genuine arms are around £300+ new.
As it stands, lower arms for your early car are around £18 with the balljoints (seperate from the arm) being around another £20 a side.
Other way is to get low offset wheels. 944 Fuchs could be an option that IMO looks great on an early 944.

Right, thanks for the info! I'll decide how viable this it is to use the later parts when I do the strip down. I hope their ok because I really want to use the D90's. I think they're probably the best looking wheel for a 944, other then the forged turbo rims.

I was wrong on the offsets. It's still pretty extreme and would require hubcentric spacers.
The offset was 23 on the early cars and between 56-62 on the later cars.
