I took a day off work yesterday to do some jobs in the garden (& get some more welding done on the Bug). I went to the tip to get rid of a load of earth & rubble & some guy pulls a set of Minilite alloys out of his car & goes to chuck them in the bin (these wheels were mint! & the tyres appeared to have plenty of thread on them too!) The guy working in the yard obviously grabbed them. I asked how much he'd want for them......Reply was......."Not for sale, I can't sell them to you as they need to be recycled, the alloy must be scrapped & the tyres have to be processed"........My reply, "I'll make sure they go back on a car so they'll be recycled anyway without any 'process' being needed"...........Tip guy's reply "Sorry mate, I can't legally sell them to you, they have to be recycled" Firstly, what idiot chucks a set of rims worth at least £100(?), What idiot thinks that 'processing' them is more environmentally sound (surely less of a foot print used just sticking them back on a car?). I reckon he already had a buyer for them, fair enough but don't play the 'eco friendly' recycler type & expect to believe it, tell it straight. I wasn't aware of a 'law' that said refuse tips can't sell wheels .......Just thought I'd share this, the guy binning them could have easily made a few quid on them, mind you he drove a TT convertible so probably doesn't need the cash.

I wasn't aware of a 'law' that said refuse tips can't sell wheels I know that due to regulation changes my local recycling tip can no longer sell stuff on site. They got round the regs by renting a big shed and moving things they reckon they can sell there - I have had a poke round it a couple of times, it is amazing what people will chuck away

I will get round to finishing it at some point

a few pounds of aluminium would not be worth much.
always thought that councils should have a few people sorting through things and selling them on. They could have long term unemployed people doing it. That would make the council be greener. And if they sold the wheels for £10. Everyone would win, as they wouldnt get that for the metal, and the buyer would get some cheap wheels. I geuss there would be health and safety tho. Might be metal fatigue in the metal.

You think thats bad, try going to your local scrap metal merchant and see what he has in the wheels bins, some of it will make you cry . Just last week I saw a set of 17" BBS alloys which looked spotless (only gave the guy £20 the set too ). Good thing about one of our local merchants though, is that you can buy anything off him for double the scrap value

I did go to a scrap yard a while ago. Sorted through the stuff and got a van full of bikes for £20. One was an alloy 24 speed Scott MTB that I fitted a spoke to the wheel and then sold for £50. The scrap yard got all the stuff from council. So I guess theres some way of getting stuff thats tipped
