Hello My other half has a 96 1.4 seat ibiza (same as a vw polo) that has an intermittent starting problem. It doesn't do it all the time but every now and again it will start as normal and then cut straight out, no spluttering or anything. It might then not start til anything from 2 to 15 attempts, but has (so far at least) eventually started. Checked obvious: dizzy cap, rotar arm, leads plugs, but because it's intermittent it's hard to diagnose and it's all controlled by one of them there computer thingies Anyone any bright ideas? Cheers

Dirty throttle body is a good one to check on these. Whip the air filter off and get in there with a rag and a tin of carb cleaner. Nice and easy.

get it hooked up to a VAG 1551 diagnostic machine, or a laptop with VAG-COM to see if it's chucking out any error codes. It may point you straight to the problem (but more probably not! )

As a VW tech the first place I'd check would be the coolant temp sender, if it's only stated doing it since the weather got cold it may be telling the ECU that it's warmer than it is which means the fuel air mix won't be enough for a cold start, also like steb said check the throttle body is nice and clean especialy if the car has a habit of cutting out at junctions. Something else to check is the ignition switch they have a habit of cracking, mostly they give the symptons of a jammed starter motor ie the ignition lights will come on but it wont crank but I've also had a couple that would let the car start but then cut out just as you describe, let us know how you get on. By the way the coolant temp senders are pretty rubbish so it hasn't had one in the last couple of years it's probably worth bunging one on anyway.

Cheers for the replies fellas
I'll give the throttle body a good clean and check out the ignition switch. I'll see about changing the temp sensor too. It was doing it through the summer too though. Also, it doesn't neccessarily do it the first time it's started, i.e. it can do it at the petrol station for example after it's been running for a while.
If the temp sensor was faulty would this show on the gauge or not??
Many thanks

Doesn't normaly show on the gauge if the sender is faulty as it uses a seperate circuit for the ecu, it might be worth while checking the coil as well while your having a poke about
